I would call that compassion rather than empathy. If Josh can't afford to lend money, then it is compassionate towards himself not to lend it to an unworthy cause. If he had money to burn, the issue would be different.
I think we can also ask:
what would Buddha do?
what would Jesus do?
what would Mohammed do?
what would [skipping centuries] Nelson Mandela do?
what would Bob Marley [who was a great man] do?
what would Judge Judy do?

"how do you teach Judge Judy to a baby?" - probably by being an empathetic person yourself? I haven't got kids. Correcting them when they show unempathetic behaviour. There is a programme in Canadian schools where a mother and baby come into class and the kids interact with and observe the baby, and this teaches them empathy.
There are things we can say: "how would you like it?" & "put yourself in their shoes" or "think what it's like for that person. How would you feel?" since empathy is all about feeling someone else's pain - literally.
do whores also have immaculate conceptions - what is a whore - and, as usual, punish the innocent - and kill the children - the misogyny and hatred of women abound
Eventually, sometimes, after a few beers at a bar and no women around, one guy will start with the "all women are whores" routine. We feel superior for a hour or so and then back home to the reality. Good men know that men are not superior, but good men did not write the Bible.
I was dumped into a time share catholic school program between JH and HS.
My best memories were the chocolate milk, reading books in chemistry, and putting the wrong answers in my cathecism books. Since there was no grading of our religious classes, I figured that what answers I gave did not make any difference. Filling in the 'blanks' of my books was really about parroting, not understanding. After about six years of this, I refused to attend any further. I consider this the approximate beginning of my intellectual life.
In hindsight I consider my experience a good one. Those six years were a long term immunization against theist ideology, but did offer minor insights into my cognition.
