Angela's one of yours, Suz - she doubtless knows about your recent regime change.
Hey Suzanne, after getting your heads-up on the likelihood of you getting a twerp as a PM, I read up on the stuff he's been doing and saying since he got elected, and I think you were understating it, to be honest. Not that Cameron is any better - he's a completely wet schoolboy compared to your guy.
The "tone," Angela, is that at the onset of this discussion, you were advocating teaching Christianity to children as a lesson in morals and ethics, and yet no one knows what the man ever said, or even if he ever existed, so in essence, you would be practicing dishonesty to children, which I strongly oppose, hence the tone.
As for, "everyone lies," you've been watching too many reruns of "House."
Actually, I was talking with my daughter, now grown, just the other day about the fact that I've never lied to her. She asked to borrow a hundred dollars to get back-to-school haircuts for herself and her own daughters, and at the time, I didn't think I could spare it and told her so, and she was OK with it. I later discovered I could in fact spare it (understand, that where my daughter is concerned, whom i love with all my heart, "spare it" means I would be OK if I never saw it again), but we live five miles apart, and I knew that if I told her I had the money for her, she would decline to come and get it, thinking that possibly that I was sacrificing something to give it to her (which I wasn't). She knew I was having a problem with my car, and when the same problem had occurred a month earlier, she volunteered to come over and follow me to my mechanic, in case I had trouble, so this time, I asked her how she would feel about following me again, she agreed, and when she got here, I gave her the hundred. "So you didn't need me to follow you?" - "I never said I needed you to, nor did I say that I wanted you to - those would have been lies, I asked how you would FEEL about following me, and you drew your own conclusion." My record is still without blemish!
To our children, when they are little, we are gods - we can do no wrong, while they can do no right, or so it must seem to them. If you lie to a child, you're sending a message that it's OK to lie - you may get away with it for a while, but one day, you won't, and the child will lose all faith in you.
The Trickster? Or you suggesting that that's Ikol spelled backward?
No, I meant trickster alright :)
"I really don't need a lecture. Im on your side."
"I really don't need a lecture. Im on your side."
I don't want to "win," Angela, or for you to "lose," for me, it's not a contest, I just can't agree with lying to children.
When I was five, my family lost a distant relative - today, I couldn't even tell you who it was - but for a few days, death was a frequent subject around the house. That prompted me to ask my mother, and as I still recall, with quite some trepidation, "Am I going to die?" My mother could have told me anything, to protect me, to calm my fears, but she chose to tell me the truth, "Yes, but not for a long, long time." So far, so good --
"given that sometimes empathy requires NOT HELPING the person -
i.e - NOT helping the person who doesnt help themselves
how do you teach that?" -
I would call that compassion rather than empathy. If Josh can't afford to lend money, then it is compassionate towards himself not to lend it to an unworthy cause. If he had money to burn, the issue would be different.
I think we can also ask:
what would Buddha do?
what would Jesus do?
what would Mohammed do?
what would [skipping centuries] Nelson Mandela do?
what would Bob Marley [who was a great man] do?
what would Judge Judy do?
