I appreciate all the opinions this photo has provoked and the fact that they were conveyed without name calling and such. Yahoo could take a lesson here! :)
Had a bad day, I need a comfort woman
@Suzanne War sure sucks doesn't it, especially when one of the parties is obsessed with fanatacism. The U.S. bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had two important intentions (three if you count the idea of seeing which bomb worked better): 1) showing Japan what could happen to all of its major cities without risking one single allied soldier; 2) serving notice to the Soviet Union that it should not roll on into surrendered territories in a post-war territory grab.
The Soviet Union quieted down, but then decided that it, too, must have nuclear capability, and so the Cold War nuclear standoff began.
@Suzanne - obviously well-researched and certainly well-written, but you made a statement that in myh mind, begs a question. You said, "The Japanese surrendered because of the Soviet threat to attack them." - why should an attack by the Soviets bother a government that was prepared to commit national Hara-Kiri?
The dropping of bombs was not taken lightly - the Japanese would not give up. They are also changing history books, 'Do not mention the War'.The following is what the Japanese did to the Chinese, buried them alive.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_war_crimesJapan's Air Self-Defense Force Toshio Tamogami was dismissed with a 60 million yen allowance due to an essay he published, arguing that Japan was not an aggressor during World War II, that the war brought prosperity to China, Taiwan and Korea, that the Imperial Japanese Army's conduct was not violent and that the Greater East Asia War is viewed in a positive way by many Asian countries and criticizing the war crimes trials which followed the war.Japanese sailors in Manila raped, tortured, and killed thousands of Filipino civilians in what would become known as the Rape of Manila. This happened all over the Pacific. Many prisoners in Japanese POW camps, were purposely infected with disease: cholera, typhoid, anthrax, plague, syphilis. Others were cut up while they were still alive to see what happened in the successive stages of hemorragic fever. Others had their blood siphoned off and replaced with horse blood. Many others were shot, burned with flame-throwers, blown up with explosives and left to develop gas gangrene, bombarded with lethal doses of X-rays, whirled to death in giant centrifuges, subjected to high pressure in sealed chambers until their eyes popped out of their sockets, electrocuted, dehydrated, frozen, and boiled alive.
The Americans bombed many Japanese cities, and the allies prepared for an invasion of Japan.Germany surrendered on the 8th March, Japan would not.The United States called for a surrender of Japan in the Potsdam Declaration on 26 July 1945, threatening Japan with "prompt and utter destruction". The Japanese government ignored this, and fought on...American airmen dropped the bomb on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, still would not surrender. So the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on 9 August. The Japanese would not surrender because they had too much honor. Their emperor would not accept defeat and their people would fight to the death. The Emperor had complete control over the people, and to them he was God. It was assumed they would surrender after the bombing of Hiroshima, but no, they didn't care about the population, it was all about the 'HONOUR'. Yes, I would have pressed the button -
For once I am forced to agree, unequivocally and unconditionally, with Suzanne. (Will wonders never cease.) If ever a country asked for a nuking, it was Japan. And worse, Germany asked for it too.
ONLY by completely and utterly defeating their regimes were we able to bring these countries into the civilized world.
RE: "For once I am forced to agree, unequivocally and unconditionally, with Suzanne."
I'm going to let you live with that.
