Very true. I point this out a lot. Theistic countries seem to get all the natural disaster, flood and drought whilst atheistic Europe? Nothing. If these really are messages from God (which they are not) he is clearly saying 'Shut up and leave me alone!'
I remember a story from years back, there was a tornado approaching a very small town, I think it was in Iowa. Most of the community fled to the church for protection from the storm, but the twister skipped over the first row of houses, bounced off a field over the second row of houses and hit the church head-on, destroying it completely. The pitiful few survivors were interviewed, thanking god for saving their lives!
But it looked to me like even if you believed in god, it should have been apparent that he had gone bowling for Christians and got nearly all of 'em.
I want to laugh and say ha ha this is great but I hate to say anything is great about a tornado. So I'll just say ha ha, I love to make religion look stupid.
Yeah...I laughed, but I felt bad for it later...
I have heard this before. I think Voltaire mentions this madness during the Lisbon earthquake 1752! Churches, believers, the rich, and the poor were crushed and killed! As an 'act of god', They should thank their lucky stars that, sometimes their god can be a bad shot, or a true marksman!
This spring, I was listening to a radio report of tornadoes (don't remember exact location). Described one that tore through a bunch of houses, hopped over the Wal-mart, and then tore up the neighborhood on the other side. It'd be hard to make up an assholier god than that, am I right?
I immediately thought about the simpsons episode "hurricane neddy" when I read the Iowa story there except ned flanders never thanked god for destroying his house.
It might be fun to ask people before and after a tornado, to see what their beliefs were, and look for changes. Could even check police records to see if death and cost of damage correlate to character flaws. This could then be a wonderful rebutal to the theist attempt to 'blame the victim'. Sadly, I think I know what we will find, no correlation or one very near zero.
