@Professor Robert,

You have some valid points, bar the last one. Many religious do not reject to the use of weapons in general.  Most proponents of the NRA are of what religious stance? You guessed Christians. Many world leaders are pro-war and have NO problem ordering their national defence to use weapons of mass destruction.

So religion doesn't really reject that at all, as a matter of fact I could find plenty of biblical quotes supporting mass destruction and obliteration.

Such as:

Judges 5:31

"So may all your enemies perish, O LORD! But may they who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength."

Science once advocated for human eugenics, including the forced sterilization of the mentally or physically handicapped.  Religion objected.

Didn't God send Moses on several genocidal campaigns? How is genocide different then eugenics? Seems to me that eugenics is at least slightly less evil than genocide.

Science argued that some races were less intelligent by virtue of various physical traits.  Religion dissented.

The Samaritans, the Gentiles, the Shiites... All inferior races or groups of people according to their respective religions.

Science experimented on human subjects who were poor, or of a particular racial group, without their consent.   Religion objected.

Religion burned witches and tortured heretics. I'll be generous and call it a tie.

Science advocated for, created, and continues to create weapons of mass destruction.   Religion objects.

Certain religions view weapons of mass destruction as holy weapons.

And, Science is not a united collective of people with one central symbol of leadership. A religion is. You don't have to convince all scientists, only the ones who are straying. In order to get a religion to admit that it's wrong, you have to convince nearly all of them. At least the most pious of them.
