@Maya - it doesn't mean they're trying to poke fun at anyone, it's just a funny juxtaposition. Christians can take it however they want. People make jokes about all sorts of things all the time that aren't designed to upset people - the point of a joke is to be funny!

Do you relate 2000 years of theology and philosophy to a fictional author’s work? What a confusion you are in! I would advice to read Paul's letters and John's Gospel in order to understand what they say. The "Logos" transcends all chauvinism and radical individualism. It relates to all people through the seminal reason that is in every man. To put it very simply, Jesus is and always will be the greatest among all men, because the divine element, the thing that is embodied in every human being, was much stronger in him and so he stood nearest to God.

@Maya The disingenuous behavior began when they were given a piece of religious idolatry as open Atheists. If they were closeted, I might fall in line with your thought there to an extent. The extent that you shouldn't assume what someone's religion is.

For example, I have creationist friends that I don't hand the book Why Evolution is True to. I know who they are and while I don't understand it, I accept it. If I handed them the book and they drew a series of pictures showing a hummingbird turning into a plane, I wouldn't become indignant about it.

In my experience, handing the gift right back would have been the best answer. Openly saying, "No thanks." as uncomfortable as that might make both parties will end the charade. But if one doesn't have that strength, this is an effective way to get them to stop giving religious gifts. The desired effect of "keep your religion" is likely the result.

I just seems like an unnecessary provocation to accept a gift from a family member, and then use that gift to insult the giver after having invited them into your home for the holidays. Some atheists are such immature shits! Why do that unnecessary thing to hurt your in-laws and damage your family?! It surely is a grave insult to give a family member a gift only later to see them invite you into their home and ridicule the Gift item in front of everyone. What kind of a sorry idiot does such a thing to a family member?!

Here is a suggestion for all the atheists here who think that this insult to family during the holidays is the heights of atheistic expression, and the best thing EVAR. For next year why not have all your shitty anti-family responses at the ready to insult and ridicule any family members who are so unlucky as to have the likes of you as relatives. Perhaps a 3 year old Niece or Nephew of yours will make a crayon drawing of an angel with sparkly wings riding a unicorn for you, so instead of saying 'wow little Sarah or Mikey that is a great drawing', you should be at the ready to beat her down by asserting your atheist supremacy and laughing in her face and telling her she is a brainless moron because angels don't really exist. Also if your old Granny, or cousin Charlotte gives you a hug and wishes you Merry Christmas be at the ready to tell the imbeciles to go fuck themselves, like the good moralistic, humanistic atheist ass-holes you are so proud to be. What ever happened to basic human decency when you invite people into you home?!

If you despise your in-laws because they believe in silly magical beings, and you no longer desire contact with them because of it, then just be honest about that. Tell them that you consider them unwelcome in your home because they do not believe as you do. It would be better than inviting them over during the holidays and spitting in their faces by ridiculing the gifts they have given you and insulting your family members like you have done in this case.

Of course this is just the opinion of one Atheist who values family cohesiveness over the continuous fomenting of family disharmony by fighting with loved ones over non-existent gods. Gods do not exist, so why lose family and friends over them. Grow up!
