I think "NO DEITY" and "ATHEISM" are the same thing... also the various other steps are pretty much irrelevant to atheism.

Also I don't like the symbolism of having to walk down stairs, into the darkness to get to atheism, or walking up stairs into the light to get to christianity. And do those people seem to be getting older as they walk further to the left?

Personally I prefer the infinite cartwheel model I saw in a video on you tube once. Basically everyone starts in the centre (agnostic/atheist) and some people will choose to follow one of the spokes of the cartwheel (the spokes are religions). While walking along the spoke, you will meet people along the way telling you that you picked the correct spoke and to keep going. But ultimately, the cartwheel is infinite and you just keep walking, making it harder to change to a different spoke and harder to get back to the center.

I notice that the man reaches atheism at a progressively older age, which to me illustrates the struggle to break free of indoctrination from a young age.

I also notice that what looks like to be fabric around the bottom is missing from the top, and the further down the stairs you get, the more that fabric is filled in. This can represent knowledge filling in the gaps that the supernatural deity could not fill. Or it can represent descent into darkness as matt said. I took it as knowledge filling in the blank spaces.

or the old age can represent being wise and wisening up. Throughout most of history, elders were known to be wise. Either that or the difficulty to break free from it.

Idunno, i feel like this can go two ways

Great pic!  Although I feel it should be an ascent rather than a descent.

Definitely agree with Heather...should be an ascent!

What the hell is the old atheist carrying? A t-bone steak?

all this is as i see it is the fundamentalists attempt to not only discredit atheists and atheism, but to again claim that NO moral goodness can be found outside of biblical literalism! it promotes the non-supportable world-view that christianity is the epitome of man's achievements and that without it, man descends into some moral abyss. if i were in that class, i would challenge the professor on this claim, but i would probably end up getting kicked out! even as a fundie myself, i questioned everything that any prof ever said to me when i was in the many bible schools i attended! sad, but many fundies actually believe this, and if polls are accurate, most of the american public believes this as well!

@LotusGeek T bone steak!

I think descent is fairly accurate. Having recently made the trip from Christianity, once you take that first step of doubt it's easier to take the rest of the steps. Whereas ascending can be difficult at times.

Other than illustrating Atheist enlightenment as a decent rather than ascent, it is fine.
