I am sure there have been more than 2000 gods!
I thought that about 5x10^9 names of 'God' was mentioned somewhere....;p)
Jessica: has it occurred to you that perhaps the REAL reason you want to “sit this one out” is that its logic is flawless? After all, ONE of these positions (plus the possibility that SOME, if not all gods could exist) must be true; so which one would you pick?
It seems to me that in order for you to be true to your professed monotheism you would be forced to pick #2. Are you REALLY comfortable with that? Even if you choose not to respond, this brilliantly succinct conundrum Milos has presented must be a challenge to the thoughtful intelligence you’ve often displayed on this site.
It must also be a challenge to much of America, then. According to a Gallup Poll over 90% of Americans ought to be tussling with the same dilemma. Perhaps they need to be encouraged to question their beliefs rather than have atheism used to question their intelligence.
Conversely, just over 50% of Brits surveyed have no religion, in fact some 66% are not affiliated with any religious organisation whatsoever.
I hold no belief that Zues exists or that he ever did even though at one time a large section of the worlds population did. The reasons I also don't believe that Apollo is a god are the same as the reasons I don't believe Jehovah is one.
#1 is impossible since most if not all gods contradict each other, so it was obviously just included to make a point.
This is indeed flawless.
As for the number of gods.
If anyone intends researching that question, this would be a good place to begin: http://www.godchecker.com/pantheon/index.php
