"But god never leaves a prayer unanswered!" - Load of bull turd.
To be fair, when I was a Christian I was also very concerned with social justice, and just in helping people in need. But in a lot of cases, there isn't much you can do to help people. I've never had a lot of money or anything to give to people. So I gave them kind words, friendliness, sometimes friendship, and I prayed for them. Or I prayed for situations in the world that I had no control over. I wanted to do *something*, when there was nothing practical or physical that I could do. Now that I don't believe in God, I feel so much more helpless. I can't even pray for people. I can still be involved in my community, still do what I can for social justice, still be kind to homeless people, etc. I'm studying and eventually going into a field of work where I will be helping families in transition. But there are a lot of times when there really is just nothing I can do. And sometimes I wish that I could at least pray for them. I hate this feeling of helplessness.
Anyway, I know that a lot of religious people use prayer as an excuse to be lazy, but I just wanted to give another perspective. Also, laziness and indifference to the suffering of others is not just reserved for the religious, either.
Yesterday, a man approached me at a gas station and asked for a donation in exchange for washing my windows. He had his right arm amputated and I was convinced that he was, as he claimed, doing what he could to support his wife and children. After he cleaned my windshield, I thanked him. He said “God bless you!” I didn’t respond to that; but I wanted to say, “While you’re at it, why don’t you ask God to regrow your arm?” But I’m not that big of an asshole, so I said nothing and drove on.
It is interesting that the religious believe in fervent prayer and that they can actually influence their god to help someone in need as if the god was unaware of their plight. But they consider it entirely unreasonable to expect the same god to regrow a lost limb for them. Why? After all this is supposed to be a being that has unlimited capabilities and fathomless love for it's worshipers.
Yet another of the many inconsistencies in the dogma of sky fairies.
