Christians try to imagine a life without their god.
Because that would be cruel and the cat most likely does not want you to punch this cat in the face.
But there is a God...so you'd probably better not punch that cat...cause as satisffying and pleasurable as animal torture is, it's less pleasurable than Gods loving forgiveness when you sizzle forever.
Christian: So then you so called “fronkey farmer”, if you don’t believe in God and follow his commandments, what is stopping you from committing murder???
Me: Nothing is stopping me. If I wanted to commit murder I could.
Christian: And what has stopped you so far from committing murder?
Me: I have never wanted to commit murder, so I haven’t. What is stopping you?
Christian: God’s Law, of course.
Me: Ok, keep believing. Please, keep believing.
Reg...dont pretend you dont want to murder people anymore than you don't want to punch that cat's face in. We all say we don't do it because it is wrong, but we all know the real answer...it's cause we will get caught. If there were no police around...we'd all start punching cats and murdering our neighbours. God is the ultimate policeman, to make sure no one gets away with their cat-punching. Doesn't that prove God is real? Do you really believe in a universe where people can get away scot free with punching cats and killing random people?
I am determined to use my free will not to punch any cats.
That's what you say...but you never know what you'll do until you're faced with the decision. Imagine...someone is holding a newly born kitten, it is the most adorable little creature you've ever seen...it meows a squeaky sound that melts everyone's hearts...its big eyes stare at you...it uses its little tongue to lick your nose...and then what? You won't punch it in the face? Really? Would you be willing to bet your eternal soul on that?
Love the back and forth about free will. Totally agree.
I came to appreciate Libertarianism when Penn Jilette made a great point, "I have raped and murdered every time I felt the urge. The total today is 0."
Each of us has the choice to exercise force on another, but as a moral being, we decide when to apply the force. Waiting for an authority to tell you the best moment to apply force will most likely deceive you:
X happens in front of you, call the authority and ask, authority agrees, moment is gone.
X happens in front of you, authority's rule states X is bad, you agree, turns out rule was poorly written and immortal, you and the authority made a bad choice.
We all must be leaders in our own lives, make our own decisions and accept the consequences. Argument from Authority has always been a fallacy and will continue to be a fallacy. YOU must make the choice, no one else can do it for you. Make sure it is the best choice possible.
YOU must make the choice, no one else can do it for you. Make sure it is the best choice possible.
A serial killer makes what he believes are the best choices. So does an Islamic terrorist. There is a authority and it is called the vast majority. The rules evolved along with us to help us cooperate to survive. Ants, bees, lions, and monkeys all have rules. So do we. The authority is not god. It is nature.
I killed a cat in my own way before I died at 21.
