Comment by Unseen on April 26, 2012 at 2:21pm So much for cultural relativity. IMO some cultures are better than others.
Comment by SteveInCO on April 26, 2012 at 2:22pm Unquestionably. And FGM is not justified on cultural grounds either.
Comment by Ghost The Smoker on April 26, 2012 at 2:34pm To hell with political correctness . . . period.
Comment by SteveInCO on April 26, 2012 at 3:45pm @Haunter -- A lot of people find it politically incorrect to criticize non-western cultures
Comment by Arcus on April 26, 2012 at 4:39pm The picture actually comes from Mona Eltahawy's article in Foreign Policy's Sex Issue(!) Highly recommended reading.
yes! thank you Arcus!, the article is called "why they hate us".. the war on women in the middle east

of course some cultures are better than others.. and to say otherwise is to ignore the tribal practises that mutilate women, kill them for having sex, child brides, ect ect... and say it's ok because it's their "culture"..
multiculturalism is great when it doesn't contradict human rights.. when it's doesn't incorporate a faith based judicial system written by 7th century men that see women as inferior, and only as good as an intact hymen...

Rights are always based on some specific culture's preferences, prejudices, and biases. Rights come in two flavors: legislated and imaginary.
In your case, you are all for multiculturalism as long as it's compatible with what you (and our culture) think is right. In a Hindu culture, they might think we're okay as long as we stop eating beef (though pork, lamb, and chicken are okay).
