I think the theist claims are thin even to themselves. There is a feeling that I have had, and maybe others, that nature is threatening to christians (and humans generally), it does not validate ideology generally, the sacred is hard to find, death seems available at every opportunity, the 'hand of god' seems a little dirty, moral issues surround them, their ignorance haunts them, other religions are chomping at their 'we are the one' claims, and the 'bible' is just another book among millions of books!

Surrounding themselves( and ourselves), with others that 'agree with us' helps us feel safe, and the local metaphysical commentments are reflected back to us, making it appear that reality favors us. Nature seems disinterested in human affairs, and offers reminders at the drop of a hat!
