Pretty much the opposite of the Australian "Liberal" party.

The difference between liberals and conservatives is which pocket of yours is their hand in. Neither believe in freedom. Liberals believe in personal freedom but not property freedom. Conservatives believe in property freedom but not personal freedom. I don't subscribe to either and there is another choice.

Spot on Matt. I've always wondered about that. Labor Party - for the workers. National (Country) Party - for the farmers. Liberal Party - not even remotely liberal. I doubt it's irony so they were either liberal to begin with but have since lost their way or the name was simply propaganda. I'll go with the latter.
