Dear Folks:

I have a friend, unsure if 'friend' is the proper term, but I try not to intentionally create enemies, that is a self appointed minister that I have know for about 20 years. She has assumed for about as long, that I am a christian. Even after long talks and critical arguments she has continued to operate, as if, I am in her camp. It was only a few years ago that she finally woke up one day and realized that 'no he is NOT'!

About the same time, I delivered firewood to her home with the expectation of a minor payment of $50 for a cord of very nice dry fire wood because she needed it, and I had it available from our own stocks. I waited for a few weeks expecting payment, but nothing happen. I heard through the network of common friends that she had determined that I was an evil atheist/unbeliever, and should not be given the time of day, let a lone a fair payment.

I kept reminding her of the cost, my labor investment, and that she had offered payment even before delivery. Still no dice.

Our network of friends now went after her. Is it fair of a christian to cheat another? You have known James for years, has he ever been unfair to you? You have offered James help when needed, he was returning the favor! A load of firewood that large would be much more expensive somewhere else!

Finally after about a year plus, the message got through and I received a $60 check, but no apology. At this point I felt that it would be hard to continue our connection, even when during all that time she seemed to have a good soul and it seems nice to have such in my life.

She once told me, 'I'll believe for you!' I suggested that such an act is actually an insult to my own conscience, and shows the inability to respect another mind.

I still debate with myself about forgiveness, maybe I am still not big enough to do so.

With the greatest of respect, trusting after the fact based on a mere expectation is not the way to go.

Hey theists:  I invite you to pray for me to die very soon; all together now - a horribly painful death.  Hey, I'll even join you.  Dear God; strike me dead this instant; and make it hurt!  Boy!  I'm sure worried, now.

All kidding aside, I wonder how many loving Christians are now kneeling in front of their computers with their hands clasped praying for my agonizing demise?  I wonder how many NRA Christians are googling my name right now to find my address?  Now THEM I'm afraid of!

I think Pat Condell sums it up perfectly.

Hi James..I'm never amazed of the arrogance of some of the believers and how their god makes them feel so damn special. She obviously doesn't practice what she preaches.

I doubt you avoid running into her because she's a crazy severely deluded lady that believe's snakes can talk and that there's an invisible magic man in the sky that loves her and looks out for her......curious how she avoids you.

I recently had a believer call me "mindless" because of my disbelief in any gods. After I pointed out the above and a few other key facts I told him to look in the mirror to see who is truly mindless,  that ended our conversation.

I'd say, "Take a look around you. If there is a god operating here, which one is it? I'd say it has to be Satan."

The '..expectation of a minor payment..' was based upon offers made previously to pay for the material. I had delivered to her firewood before, that had been had after storms in our area, where very little labor or transportation costs were incured, ad when I asked for no compensation.. She is an older woman. now in her 80's, and there has been a network of friends that help her out when possible, I was one of these. It is possible that excess expectations were generated at the time, but the remainder is still true. My statis as an atheist had colored her judgement of me, inspite of all her experience with me as a good man. Everything had now become grist for a an untrue evalution, with the result that I was somehow 'unworthy'.
