It is ironical that The Matrix is a favourite movie for believers since they see the metaphor upside down. They view 'the matrix' as the world we live in and 'the reality' as the world they go when they die. Pretty twisted, eh?

I'm constantly amazed at how many ways the Matrix can be used as a metaphor for religion. It works on either side. Is religion the Matrix or is this world we live in merely a show put on by God for his/our benefit?

While I was going to school, about the time 'The Matrix' came out, a few of the local campus theist groups came out againist it on the point that 'culture is like the Matrix'. Sadly, as I was slowly trying to complete my philosophy degree, I noticed the number of cult groups in operation on the campus of PSU and OSU, and in the surrounding towns. It became clear that each of these groups could act as a confining logic structure for anyone that fell into them. Even the department I was in showed signs that an elitist mindset could result.
