In my book it's a law.

Don't confuse law and theory.  A law is essentially a mathematical construct based on empirical observations.  The so-called law of gravity  states that the force between two masses is proportional to the product of the two masses divided by the distance between them squared and the whole thing multiplied by a constant which has determined experimentally.

The so-called "law" does not explain what gravity is.  That is where Einstein's General Theory of Relativity comes in.  It does attempt to explain gravity.  Unfortunately for me that explanation is far beyond my powers to understand.

Standing on a cliff edge it would be wise to understand Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation.

@Ron, a law is just a theory that was first developed before the mid-1800s when natural philosophy focused on finding and describing natural laws.

Guv=8 pi Tuv   is just a different, broader theory than Fg=Gm1m2/r^2
