The irony is both Galileo and Copernicus believed the orbits were circular.  Anyone who was really familiar with the data back them could say for certain that that was not true even hypothetically conceding it was a sun centered system.  That was in large part the real reason Galileo was rejected (insulting the pope didn't help either).  It's a very complex story and we tend to oversimplify it in our zeal to present it as church vs. science.
