Re: Theory. I couldn't agree more.
Re: "(no offense to the home-schoolers out there)"
Like you I have no issue with those who feel they can do better than the standard school system. I've known too many who've used home-schooling as you've said-- as a form of indoctrination, mainly religious. In the process disallowing their kids any connection with others their own age.. Ie, as you said about exposure to ideas and concepts other than their own.
I have done tutoring off and on in mathematics. Most of the time I have had good results and the children seemed to show marked improvement, sometimes that improvement was not noticable for a few years after I had long disconnected. In one experience I faced a rather serious issue. A women had hired me to tutor her son who was falling behind. We sat down with his text books and slowly worked on problems to see where he was hanging up. It became clear that he was having problems with negative numbers and subtraction. The woman had tried home schooling and taken her son out of grade school, while she herself had not finished high school. While I was explaining a few procedures and methods of visualization for subtraction and negative numbers, the woman told me I was a fool, how dare I teach her son such crap! I felt like a deer in headlights at that moment, and slowly lifted myself up and walked quietly out the front door. I wonder sometimes what else I could have done for them..;p(
Archaeopteryx - Yes I really didn't want to hear that about Louisiana. I'm going to go stick my head back into the sand now.
Didn't you know visualization for subtraction is the work of the devil?
