Dinosaur communities were separated by both time and geography. The "age of dinosaurs" (the Mesozoic Era) included three consecutive geologic time  periods (the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods). Different dinosaur  species lived during each of these three periods. For example, the Jurassic dinosaur Stegosaurus already had been extinct for approximately 80 million years before the appearance of the Cretaceous dinosaur Tyrannosaurus. In fact, the time separating Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus is greater than the time separating Tyrannosaurus and you. At the beginning of dinosaur history (the Triassic Period), there was one supercontinent on Earth (Pangea). Many dinosaur types were widespread across it. However, as Pangea broke apart, dinosaurs became scattered across the globe on separate continents, and new types of dinosaurs evolved separately in each geographic area. More info

A lot of people use the term "dinosaur" to cover a lot of extinct reptiles. Of course, dinosaurs in the strictest sense walked supported by vertical legs, not the horizontal 90-angle bent legs many of the extinct reptiles had, and which one sees on the crocodiles and alligators of today.

lol , love this painting reminds me of some mini-series tv program that was once on the halmark channel in south africa, where these people went through the Bermuda Triangle and found a Island where people lived with dinosaurs .

I hadn't thought about the time distance between Periods all that much. The painting above is no more inaccurate than the dinosaur scene out of Disney's Fantasia! When dinosaurs ruled the earth, they did so for one hell of a long time. We've been here for the blink of an eye in comparison.

Ken Ham is the man behind the Creation Museum. I posted this video almost 3 years ago and I still get angry hearing it (which is fine with me).

I used to have a tee-shirt with that Dinotopia painting on it. If I still had it I'd probably write, "Visit the Creation Museum" on the back.
