Recently purchased The Skeptics Annotated Bible. Best 20 bucks I've spent religious literature.
I read the annotations are too small to be read, how true is it? Amazon's preview option is not very informative in that regard.
There's always the website, too.
In any case, this picture is a good zinger for the double standard they engage in.
As Richard Dawkins points out, the mere fact that we are selective about what we choose to follow in the bible proves our morality does NOT in fact derive from the Bible. Otherwise we wouldn't filter it, having no higher standard to filter with.
Selective morality? Isn't that what the priests of the Catholic Church engage in with alarming frequency?
@Ed. They do, and I agree with that observation. But I don't see how it connects with my point (other than the word "selective"), which was that people pick and choose which parts of the bible to follow--then assert that it is the basis--the touchstone of morality. If it were, they couldn't ignore parts of it, because they'd have no criteria to use to judge what parts should be ignored.
They reject slavery, even though it is in the bible, as being wrong. But if the bible is the basis of morality, how can they know that slavery is wrong? They really have another, unnamed basis for their morality, and use cherry-picked bible references to somehow validate it. Intellectually sloppy to say the very least.
Get the Ipad app. it is amazing.
Realistically the Bible possibly has enough twistable info to answer most any question. If the Bible doesn't have a passage that is close enough, one can become a metaphor, or some cherry picking preacher will invent one concluding that goats should kill pigs because . . . No one seriously reads the KJV--it is far too gimbledepeg to be taken seriously.
The KJV has roughly 1200 pages that include among the gibberish some 31,173 scriptures. Thus if i ask the question "How can a pig kill a goat?" someone can come up with a Biblically based (biased) response that will give us all we need to know--right? Sadly, that's always been true. Bollycock replaces Bullshit and no one whimpers. Imagine that.
