Reminds me of a previous discussion, why do christians wear seat belts? If they are sooooo sure that they are going to heaven when they die, why put it off?
hmm. I don't know, I see two aspects of this. I never believed in god(s), but I remember contemplating death would be interesting just to see what it was like as a child. Did I grow a fear of death? This thinking would only really become problematic is the child went out of its way to meet this 'god' before the critical thinking part of the mind kicks in.
Now I'm thinking about this, I think the fear of death started for me as a simple 'but I wouldn't get to finish...' a fear of death is natural and healthy, more than necessary for evolution to work, could it be that is at least partly learnt as we grow though?
Why do you think the armed forces of the world love their soldiers young? As you guys pointed out, read most books on child development and our brains, for men anyway, don't fully develop until age 25. The reasoning part anyway.
There are humans however, as evidenced by the back and forth in that thread, that never really fully develop the reasoning part of our brains by the age of 25. The insanity of that thread! Especially the "Aww's" make my skin crawl. Little Johnny wants to die so's he can see god, how sweet... Shoot me right the fuck now!
Great point, well made and deserving of a chuckle. I cant find any flaws in your statement at all.
Though many of the people in that thread are lost to self inflicted idiocy, I wouldn't worry about 'Little Johnny' Many young people break free of the shackles of indoctrination every single day and at a growing rate.
As we develop, and we become more able to fend for ourselves, our process of gathering facts turns from 'what do mum and dad think' to 'I wonder what other people have to say' then eventually to 'where do i fit in' (insane amount of paraphrasing there of course) In many cases, the harder the indoctrination, the less room for error. And when 'Little Johnny' finds the first crack in the fabrication, the house of cards will start to disintegrate. At this point its up to 'Little Johnny' if he decides to be ignorant or investigate further.
The only aspect of this that I see...is that such a child will see life after death as something better...and this life now as something less good. That is tragic. To encourage a child to think this way is irresponsible.
This ssems to give me more debate material dealing with a nephue and his gun/violence fetish, 'well you do still have a wonderful future ahead of you when you actuallty grow a conscience!'
I wonder if any of the crackpots who 'like' that post saw this story from October 25, 2013 and still think kiddie suicide for God is so adorable.

I still remember my years in the catholic church about that time in my life. My family was only losely connected to our family church and expect that that that 'connection' kept me out of those questions. At about 11, my sister died. I was already questioning church ideology at the time, since my sister spent most of her childhood at the local children's hospitial. Nothing really made much sense at the time, as a young growing nerd I was stuck with the bigger questions as they appeared or I started to understand.
