Years ago I meet a man that was at a party of Mensa members. While sitting drinking beer and tasting the 'brownies' (hehehe), he told us of his history. He had survived WWII and on the day of conquest of an island he took a machine gun, climbed to the top of a hill, discharged a full clip of ammo into the sky and declared that 'God was dead', for him! For him the most rational belief, while in a foxhole, was that 'God is no where to be found!'  

My family finish compiling our father's war journals, a few years ago, and then publishing a small book of his drawings and poems. It was clear that WWII had affected him severly, and later give him the material he needed for his paintings/art. Much of his writings concern the defiling of the 'sacred' in the Pacific islands and the realization that religion, many times, was in service, during war time, to death.
