That's really not true. I took a class on the history of science last semester and science only survived as much as it did because of the church. If it wasn't for the monks who copied texts, a lot more science would have been lost. Sure they didn't really progress science and they definitely did something things against it, but they also helped it a lot. For example, the only reason the calendar is as good as it is is because the church needed a way to keep track of holidays. And there are a lot of works that have a lot of scientific fact in them, but just refer to god to make the church happy.

Raven that was a poorly thought out reply. To claim that the church was the protector of science during the dark ages because they had their own scribes keep track of existing knowledge while at the same time carrying out the very activities that created the dark ages and arrested scientific investigation is an oxymoron of epic proportions.
