I'm surprised more of us aren't bringing this up

Saw this on reddit this morning.

You are assuming, apparently, that Christians read the Bible.  Not so much.  If they did, there would be many fewer of them around.  Your quote is taken from the Pentateuch, which, I assure you, most Christians avoid quoting, lest they sound like raving lunatics.

Of course Deuteronomy is the Torah of the Hebrew Scriptures.   You'd be best addressing that question to Orthodox Jews, not Christians.

Now, for homework, go and research what the general treatment of rape was in the nomadic tribes of the time in that part of the world.  Then consider whether Deuteronomy was an improvement.

Humanity has learned about ethics and about God slowly, in gradual steps.  The Bible is in part a history of that developing understanding.

It makes little sense to point out how Pythagoras was wrong on points.  Of course he was!  What's remarkable is that Pythagoras made advances over others at the time, and some of those advances and especially that way of thinking is worth learning from and remembering.  Humanity has learned math and science in gradual steps, too.

ah Professor Robert.  You escaped the other thread without answering my question.  SO I will hijack this thread and ask you again.

Based on the vast molestation coverup perpetrated by the Catholic church and the Vatican, do you feel it should be dismantled?

I'm afraid not, Robert. Jesus himself stated unambiguously that until heaven and earth are snuffed out and all things come to fruition the Hebrew Scriptures do not change one bit.

"For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished." - Jesus in Mathew 5:18

But of course the Bible never means what it says. The Bible always says what YOU mean. That may have something to do with why there are 41,000 denominations of Christianity in the world today.

Seems like “Professor” (?) Roberts picks and chooses his morals from the Bible. Well why don’t you take your own advice Rob –

“Of course Deuteronomy is the Torah of the Hebrew Script. You’d best address that question to Orthodox Jews, not Christians”

Well it seems what you’re saying is –the Torah isn’t relevant. If the Torah’s not relevant then:
– Genesis isn’t relevant. If Genesis isn’t relevant – then original sin isn’t relevant. If original sin isn’t relevant, then Jesus isn’t relevant. If Jesus isn’t relevant, then Catholicism isn’t relevant. If Catholicism isn’t relevant, then you’re wasting your time and life!

You only live once. This is not a dress rehearsal for a big after party. Once you past on, you will no longer exist. Stop wasting your time defending folklore and bronze-age myths. Live your life.

"Humanity has learned about ethics and about God slowly, in gradual steps." - Professor Bob

Perhaps our understanding would be greatly improved if these supernatural beings would make an appearance every few hundred years or so. Verifiable evidence is a wonderful thing for those seeking understanding.

This discussion reminds me of the recent story about Elizabeth Smart speaking at Johns Hopkins last week.

In 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her Salt Lake City home, held captive in the mountains, and raped repeatedly for nine months.* Since her escape, she has emerged as an advocate for human trafficking victims—and recently, a critic of abstinence-only sex education. When Smart spoke at a Johns Hopkins University panel last week, she explained one of the factors deterring her from escaping her attacker: She felt so worthless after being raped that she felt unfit to return to her society, which had communicated some hard and fast rules about premarital sexual contact.

“I remember in school one time, I had a teacher who was talking about abstinence,” Smart told the panel. “And she said, ‘Imagine you’re a stick of gum. When you engage in sex, that’s like getting chewed. And if you do that lots of times, you’re going to become an old piece of gum, and who is going to want you after that?’ Well, that’s terrible. No one should ever say that. But for me, I thought, ‘I’m that chewed-up piece of gum.’ Nobody re-chews a piece of gum. You throw it away. And that’s how easy it is to feel you no longer have worth. Your life no longer has value.”
