Simple, people are idiots.
That "vast majority" has been told the same thing since they were children, so it's part of the "landscape" of their picture of how the world is. Carlin is telling them something they already believe because they've been told a million times, since they were young enough to just trust what adults told them.
If Carlin were to try to tell that story to the few adult people who were not raised like that, he'd get a different reaction; many would look at him like "oh no, not one of them." Others might be more neutral.
If he really worked at it (not that George Carlin would!) he might manage to convince a few of them. (Now I am not talking about people who know why they are atheists, I am talking about people who are atheists by default, by never having been taught otherwise. Perhaps they were raised in a family where the parents left the subject alone, figuring the kids would decide later in life.)
On the flip side, "man in the sky" is something you can't test. Wet paint is a statement people can test, so many of them will.
