Well, i am a mid class Brazilian, i was raised in a multi-religious family(dad's family is 100% catholic/mother's family is catholic, evangelic, spiritualist ...). Although my parents are from 2 different religions, i they concluded that i would be better raised as a catholic, my parents always influenced me to have a critical thinking and never be afraid to ask questions, accept others beliefs and etc. Although my father is the most religious person in the house, he is the one that most pulled me to science, we both have a passion for it, he loves physics and chemistry, is quite interested in technology, laws of physics, the way how things work on the universe. But to him, as the same to my mother, they believe that there has to be if not someone, something behind all the creation of everything and that this is god. But they can't answer me one question:"if everything has a maker, then who created god?"
Why are you here?
I am here to meet other atheists, discuss related stuff without suffering discrimination from religious fundamentalists(or the idiot ones)
The religion you left
Why you left your religion.
Well, long story short, i disagree in many things with my religion and it disagree with many things i agree, like abortion for example.
Through my life, there were many moments that i got in conflict with religion, not just my church. But also most(or all) the others.
Like the battle between creationism and evolution, i never believed in creationism and i always made that quite clear and even my catechist agreed affirmed that i was a way for the ancients to explain how god created the world in a way that people of that time could understand.
Another -1 score to my church and for religion came when i studied about the crusades, combined with all that recent islamic extremism and terrorism led me to the idea that religion can very well be used to make peoples minds, control them and fool them, which makes it really dangerous if used in a bad way.
More -1 scores for religion where things like:
->All that polemic with the LHC and people claiming that i was the scientists trying to prove the nonexistence of god and that it had to be stopped. If god exists, then what are they so afraid of? Also, that experiment had nothing to do with proving or disproving god, which make these peoples real hypocrites.
-Disrespect with other beliefs: I've got tired of passing the image of my religion not be disrespectful, just for a group of morons say completely the opposite, it really sucks.
-Here in Brazil in the last few years there has been a BOOM of new churches, most of them evangelic, and they are all using religion to make people give money to them, they make peoples feel better, perform "exorcisms" and shit like that, act kind fully with their followers, and when they get their loyalty, they come saying that "god" need your money, they say that then more money you give to "god", better is going to be your place in heaven, and the fact that people really believe on that shit, and that i have relatives being fooled by one of these churches, really enrages me.Also, i made me question "How is it possible that god see this happening and don't do anything to stop it?Why he let that happen? Is he okay with that?Isn't that the opposite to what he says?" the only answer that i get from this question is that the ones that use religion for profit are going to hell. But that is not enough, they go to hell. But their relatives and partners will keep that church running, living a luxury life with rivers of money, flying around with their private jets bought "in the name of god".Where is the solution in that? To make matters worse, these new churches see all other religions, agnosticism and atheism as a treat to their profits, so they preach EXTREME intolerance to other religions and non-religions, just ask me and i can send you videos, news and photos to prove that, also links of sites of these "churches" where they claim that if ever doubt of god, you WILL go straight to hell, that those that don't believe are servants of the devil and that other religions like Buddhism are things of the devil, believing or not, i already heard people saying that Buda is a demon that the peoples that have those statues are devoted to demons.
-Right of abortion, this is the hot spot of the moment, according to some priests and people from several different religions, including catholicism,i am a murder, a genocide and going to hell for supporting abortion, and this is one of the reasons i am pulling out.I am pro-abortion and i wont change my mind, also,if they disapprove abortion, fine, they have the right to.But they don't understand that they have no right to force the others to disapprove.Recently the abortion of acephalic babies(those without a brain) became allowed here in Brazil(2012).The problem is that as i speak, there are dozens of petitions running on the internet and campaigns financially supported by churches to take away this right even if just locally(in a town or in a state). That is a major problem, for you people to have an idea, its not the first we get this right
