Profile Information:

Your Religious Status
Atheist
About Me:
I'm a husband, animal lover, moral vegetarian. My wife is an ecologist. I work in IT by day, but that's just to pay the bills. I really don't care about my career except that it feeds me and my cohabitantas at home. I am the debate and presentation co-ordinator for the Grand River Atheists (Kitchener/Cambridge/Waterloo/Guelph area in Ontario Canada). My wife is a fiddle player (almost entirely playing Irish style) and I a Celtic Guitar accompanist (accompanying almost entirely Irish tunes!).
Age
36-40
Why are you here?
Isn't that a deep question? From a biological standpoint, I don't remember being consulted on the matter. From a philisophical standpoint, to increase happiness.
The religion you left
Catholic
Why you left your religion.
Because it's obviously based on notions that seemed sensible prior to understanding humans the way we do today (philisophically, psychologically, neurologically)

    awesome profile picture

Agreed, it is sad. But in a country where less than 8% are non-religious there's no other choice really. At least not just yet.

    "Moral vegetarian"

    Science craps on that logic.
  • Rose Trinh

Haha thanks for the kind words! I was just in the process of moving (and being without internet for over two weeks... how did I ever survive?) not to mention starting a new job, working on my illustration portfolio and being generally awesome! :) So glad to be back on here!

Michael, as one of the moderators of TA i have to warn you that if you continue to post the kinds of comments you're posting in the animal rights thread it's going to result in your being banned.
i'm asking you to take it down a notch or two so i don't have to do that.
  • Nelson

Michael, you're obviously an intelligent person and, as such, i find it hard to imagine that you couldn't express your disagreement in that thread without resorting to "fuck you both" style responses. why go there? surely you must understand that no when you respond that way you do a disservice to your argument; no one that disagrees with you will remember the cogent points you made, they'll just remember how you ended up.
i hope you'll adjust like i need you to. i think your contributions to TA have been valuable so far and i'd consider TA to have lost something if you continue commenting in a way that's sure to result in your being banned.
  • Nelson

hey Michael, do me a favor and repost the thread on antidepressants while copying and pasting the full article into your post. blind offsite links are not allowed by TA's guidelines. of course include the link to the source for attribution. check out the guidelines and let me or any of the other moderators know if you have any questions.
    thanks Michael!
  • Nelson

no worries! do make sure you repost as that's interesting stuff!
  • Beautiful Black Atheist...

lol people are curious but I usually respond with ' it's personal' if they're age 35+, the 18-20 somethings are much more open-minded...I'm like a rockstar among my son's friends. lol

The protein and acid in meat allowed the growth of larger brains. Like the one you use to read this sentence. Why deny this? What is immoral about eating meat, when done in a humane manner? There are plenty of animal populations that need to be kept under control (I'm sure you would consider humans one of these, but that is a sticky moral undertaking)- should we just dump the meat after we kill those animals? That would be wasteful. Proper hunting, when done correctly, is absolutely moral.

I think the morality debate of vegetarianism vs. omnivorism (not sure if that's a word) is a much different conversation than the ethics of PETA, and one that I would probably decline to debate with you, because I do not have my facts in a row and I come down on the opposite side, but I would attend such a debate!

I was just upset at the obvious provacateur nature of the subject title to gain views.
  • Atheist Fry

I fish for the meat I eat. How is that immoral? To assume everyone gets their meat from the grocery is wrong.

"I don't go around telling people while they're eating a burger that they're evil"

If you did... I'd make you eat my burger. Just saying. lol also, feel free to shove lettuce down my throat if I do the same.
  • Perthy

Ah yes, I posted it, then was told that there was already a thread on the book. I think in the Coffee Break group?

Hi Michael, I've noticed that you haven't been hanging out with us and I do miss you being here. How's it going? You doing OK? I've joined up with the Atheist Meet-up group in my area and have met a very diverse and interesting group of people. The group has many activities so it's nice to be making some new friends in my my new local.... Hope you have not deserted T/A? Come back soon, you are a real asset here and I'd hate to lose your friendship.
  • Jtrottier
