Rob the Ridiculous, actually there is actual data backing up the IQ/atheism thing. And the 'average' simply is a number that changes. For instance, the average intelligence is actually dropping steadily and has been for a while. The downside of ignoring natural selection I suppose.
If you're born without a belief in a god, you don't have to have a certain intelligence to stay that way. However, in regards to overcoming religious indoctrination there does seem to be a link with intelligence.
Babies are not extremely intelligent, yet all of them are atheists, right? Some of the smartest people in history where theists, so at the very least intelligence by itself is not even enough to overcome religious indoctrination.
Apparently, even though intelligence is involved to some degree in regards to deconversion, it takes much more than that. As such linking intelligence to atheism is inaccurate at best.
More importantly, to me at least, is that I can't count the number of times that one of "us" atheists proclaims their intellectual superiority over a theist based on their atheism. That is absurdly stupid and that is what pisses me off.
People are not smarter because they are atheist, nor are theists dumber because they are theist.
