Below I referred to a video I had watched as The Secret Life of Cats, which is the name of a different video. The one I wanted to refer to (and did successfully link to) is The Secret Life of the Cat.
This is Kamoku. Adopted from the Hawaiian Humane Society 4 years ago. He says," Mahalo, fellow Atheist kitties!". =)
Here's a cat fact some of you may not know. As predators, cats tend to perceive another being staring into their eyes as a threatening act. Since the cat thinks you are another cat, this makes the threat even more threatening.
Now, friendly cats have a behavior that says "I'm no threat" to another cat. While gazing at the other cat, the cat gives a slow blink, which is returned, meaning "I'm no threat, either."
You can use this technique in bonding with your own cat. When he looks into your face, give the slow blink and watch for it to be returned.
By contrast, if your cat is bad and he glares at you after you discipline her (which I hope doesn't involve hitting him), you might find yourself in a staring contest. Keep staring: your discipline won't mean much if you let your kitty win. After a short while, he will turn his gaze a way. You were just a stern mama kitty.
I just watched a BBC Special on Youtube, The Secret Life of Cats. In an English country village, local pets were fitted with critter cams and GPS units. All of these cats were well-fed at home and able to get outdoors through a cat door or were let out on a regular routine.
The result has changed my thinking a bit. While they did kill some wildlife, it was quite a bit less than expected. It would seem that the feral cat problem is far bigger than the problem of the so-called "outdoor cat" who goes out but has a home with ample food and other attentions.
BTW, mankind is probably more at fault when it comes to the diminishing numbers of many wild species of birds and animals by taking away their habitats in the name of what we call "progress."
There are many mysteries regarding cats. Some of them are historical. Egyptians revered cats almost from the beginning. The mystery is this. In early Egypt, they revered lions and cheetahs. At some point, they switched from revering big cats to an early version of today's housecat. They even made the cat a very important goddess, Bast (aka Bastet). Why did they make this change?
Has your cat ever brought prey home and deposited it in front of you? Are they saying "Look at what I did!: caught a mouse!" I just saw a video by a cat expert, and his explanation is a little unflattering. You may have raised your cat from a kitten and thus may think of yourself as the cat's parent in a way. However, this expert says that the cat has noticed that you aren't very good at hunting yet, so she (more typically it's a she cat) is making sure you're taken care of. In other words, she's treating you like a kitten.
I was cooking at the range when I heard Squeaky caterwauling and screaming. Running out to see what was the matter, she had somehow got her hind feet tangled up in the string attaching a feather toy to its long wand, and the wand was firmly wedged so that the more she stuggled, the tighter the string got. I wanted to help her and tried, but of course that frightened her and her ire turned from her predicament to me. I tried throwing a towel over her but that just frightened her more and she got enough out of it to go for my hand, which I got out of the way. Plan C was going to be to get scissors and cut the string at the wand end, but while I was off for the scissors she somehow extracted herself. Now she seems a little shy of me, but cats have short memories. That will pass.
But now I fear leaving her alone, because she did that all on her own. Next time, it might be something around her neck!
I so love that cat bed..
