I felt like telling him he ought to be ashamed equating his bible with a children's fantasy book, but I kept my mouth shut, as usual. I still do. I want to keep my job.

Just wow... simply wow. For what ever reason just hearing that makes me shake my head in disbelief. But then I shake my head some more and come to my senses that, that does not surprise me.

I was about 3 or 4 years old the first time my mom took me to church with her. I was totally confused: the people I trusted to be sensible and wise believed in something like Santa Claus. I knew Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny weren't real, so how come they didn't know god wasn't real??? But not just them, there was a whole church full of adults professing this juvenile faith!

As I grew up, I just kept my mouth shut. I'd seen people's reactions enough times to different faiths, let alone NO faith to know not to say anything. As a teacher, I had a parent request equal time when I was reading Harry Potter to my class.(He was a preacher with his own church.) I felt like telling him he ought to be ashamed equating his bible with a children's fantasy book, but I kept my mouth shut, as usual. I still do. I want to keep my job.

My family wasn't extremely religious, but we did go to church every Sunday. I went to Sunday school, and attended a kids Bible study group with a home schoolers group. I think I was about 13 years old when I realized I didn't believe in God. To tell the truth there wasn't any single event that tipped me over. I suppose I realized that praying didn't do anything, and that Bible stories were ridiculous. Eventually I asked my parents why they believed in God, and they didn't have very good answers. My father said that I'll understand someday when something big in my life happens, and my mother and stepfather didn't seem to mind. My sister isn't very religious either, but she believes in the spiritual, and mystical much more than I do. I live in a very liberal area, so it isn't considered all that radical. Most of my friends are atheist, or at least non-theist.

Yeah i was going to ask the same thing. Well about your family. I am a new atheist myself but I have yet to tell my parents. How is your relationship now with them? I am still bouncing off the walls figuring what to do. I mean like I have said b4... Just wait till i get married haha... but I would love to hear yours.

"It's like saying something completely out of context in the social world and having everyone stop and look at you with their heads cocked over in complete confusion. Very frustrating."

I could not agree more Golda. Really great story. Once again thanks for joining T|A.

BTW how is your relationship now with your family?

I've been coming out for years. The closet first -- that was somewhat less difficult. But once I started telling people that, not only did I not believe in 'their' god, but I believed in NO god... things got interesting. Apparently, if I were worshiping A God they could at least assume that God could be changed into THEIR God. But once I told them I didn't believe in any of them, I was in the Crazy Box. (My personal term for the place you go when every one ELSE is nuts but they think YOUR ideology is wrong.) Even my father, who I love and is very intelligent, said this when I told him: "No, I can understand what your issue is with religion. I mean, they treated gay people like they were horse-shit. It's not right, and we know that now. But that's no reason to be angry with God."

Angry with God. That's when I realized *just* how different this is from anything on the planet. Everyone seems to believe in God, even those who've explored other religions. They still return to the western God (when they're from a Western Society.)

When I tried to explain to him that I wasn't *ANGRY* with 'God' but, rather, believed 'Him' not to exist, he became incredibly confused. "You'll have to explain that to me sometime soon," he said.

My father pushed away organized religion about the same time that Bush Jr. became president. But he still believes in a personal God.

As per others in my family, my mother believes in a personal God without dogma, and three of my five living brothers believe in the Einsteinian God, which is basically Science and Nature.

I guess that's my story .. it's just odd what's happened most recently. I'll save that for a blog. ;)
