I was baptized and raised as a Catholic. . My parents sent me to a catholic school. But I can say that they are not good catholics because they not even practicing their morals, all they do was pray and attend mass. They are not even good parents. My good friends are also christian. I am currently enrolled in a very religious college run by what they call "the dominican fathers". I'm sick and tired of forcing myself to attend masses and religious events. And no matter how I told myself "Nica, there is god, please believe.." , my mind and heart tells me that there is none. I even went to a confession last month and told our school priest that I doubt the existence of god hoping that he will give me good explanation but he says was,, "don't worry, god will forgive you..he loves you..now pray 3 hail marys" OYG! -When I was in my elementary years, I remember arguing with my theology professors, I always ask them honest questions that they thinks is criticizing, I end up in the prefect of disciplines office when all I want is answers. What a life! I remember getting a gold medal for best in religion in grade 6! Haha! I have lived sometime in my life that I think I'm bad because of my beliefs. But now I am very open and i want to tell them that there is nothing wrong with me because I am doing things that I think is right,, without following whoevers commandments but myself.. I can practice good morals and right conduct without believing that somebody out there created me. Please help me in doing that.. How can I start? How can my family, my friends understand? So that I can comeout Thanks...

I attended the same Catholic School from Kindergarten until my senior year in High School. At around the age of 11, I announced that I no longer believed in the existence of gods. I was excused from attending mass with the class and was left in the library with the Jewish kid and one glaring old nun. As the years passed, our little group grew to 15. We crafted long and well researched arguments for Religion Class ( from which we were not excused ). I passed every Religion Class with nearly the highest marks in the class, and they never proselytized or belittled my atheist beliefs. One of the elderly priests once took me aside and told me that he admired my approach, and suggested that he didn't believe a word of it either. I think I was in a unique Catholic School in regards to their tolerance of my non belief. Did anyone else in here attend a religious school and have this experience?

I was raised christian. At first it was good. I went with my grandma who rarely judged and was a good person. She never claimed to know where nature ended and judgment began. She didn't hate gays or other races, and gave everyone the chance to prove themselves.

It wasn't until i was a young teenager that my father became born again. He took me to several of these churches whom I realized very quickly focused on exhaustion, fear, heavy metal and d&d is evil, fear, hell, hell, hell and bullying.

I grew tired very quickly of church as a crutch, the 10 min self demeaning prayers before meals, loss of common sense cause if i pray jebus will make problems go away.. I call these churches grace-killers. They are just jebus enough to not be a cult, but just shy of brainwashing.

By then I soo missed the good old days of my youth when religion was a celebration of life and community, not fear of hell, god personally watching your every move disapprovingly and the devil everywhere.

When I got older I just stopped going. I see wonder and awe (ie spirituality for some) on a personal level as a good thing. Its the whole group thing, organized thing, that religion gets dangerous. It can soo quickly turn into us vs them. It can be used to cover up real motives, like energy wars, crappy economies, and just plain hate..

On the plus side, now that media is everywhere and growing more personal (ie video phones) every day, it will be more and more difficult for deranged psychos to do their insanity with the world watching. There is hope.

I was raised Christian and went to church every sunday until I was 14. At that time I found a way to stay home and slowly over time I had my ideas solidified that I am incapable of believe without proof. After that happened I started to see all sorts of holes with the christian faith. My actual move to atheism didn't occur until I realized that belief in a super being is harder to defend logically then belief in no deity.

its best summed up with this simple statement that made me join/turn into an atheist. "Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived. "

I was raised Catholic. Went to a Catholic school for 5 years and was an alter boy. Joined the Army at 17 in 1961. I started to read history and realized how much the church was involved in some of the worst atrocities in history. Became a nonbeliever about then.
The big question was, as probably for most, If God made everything, who made God. I loved science to much to believe in the supernatural.

I felt like telling him he ought to be ashamed equating his bible with a children's fantasy book, but I kept my mouth shut, as usual. I still do. I want to keep my job.

Just wow... simply wow. For what ever reason just hearing that makes me shake my head in disbelief. But then I shake my head some more and come to my senses that, that does not surprise me.
