Religion is the greatest bane of man. To the believer, it gives him the right to oppress non believers and deprive them of life, liberty and property. Think Joan of Arc, Spanish Inquisition, Salem witch dunkings, Ireland, and the Islamic conquests from Moorish Spain. to Morocco, to Persia, to India, and parts of China and Moro Philippines and all lands in between, where Islam was spread by the sword.

If you are in a place where you can be an atheist, consider yourself fortunate. Where Islam is the religion, the government imposes the law of Sharia. There, you cannot openly claim your atheism, nor be of any other religion. - You will be put to death. In places where Islam is more tolerant, they may allow you to be atheist or practice non-Islamic religion - on the condition that you pay the humiliating tax of non-Muslims, half of all your income.

All religions are oppressive. Islam is the worst of all.

Aren't you glad you are in a place where you can be an atheist?

I was a Jehovah's Witness and genuinely believed that Armageddon could come any day. There wasn't really any one particular day that I decided not to be a JW any more. Once I moved out on my own and began to rub shoulders with non-believers more often, I began to have doubts about my faith. For a while I took Pascals wager but it didn't take long for me to see the flaws in that idea too. Gradually I realized that I just didn't believe any more.

For a while I didn't really care about religion one way or the other. It was people like Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris that turned me from an apathetic atheist into an anti-theist.

I grew up in your stereotypical Protestant Christian North American home. My dad wasn't around but my mom was a fundie all her life. I started to rebel when I was a teenager but after turning from Christianity I went onto Wicca, Buddhism, etc. Then I was just spiritual for a while. I found this book by Christopher Hitchens called God is not Great. After I read it I walked out onto my balcony, looked up at the stars and thought, "There's nothing there." I realized there was no God and if there was I certainly would never worship a cruel entity like that.

Forgive the expression, Anachro!, but "Amen!" Or, as the FSM would say: "Ra-men!" ;)

Reality is better than Faith.

My mother is Catholic, and I was raised as one throughout my entire youth. I attended mass faithfully with her and went to Sunday school until I was confirmed. I internalized everything I was taught and strove to live my young life in the christian way. My father on the other hand, is Agnostic, and it wasn't until I completed my Catholic schooling that I was allowed to hear his thoughts and beliefs on the matter. I was then, at the age of 13, given the choice by my parents whether I wanted to continue my Catholic life, or choose a different path (a choice I now realize so few others are given, unfortunately). I chose to follow my father's ideas, and became an agnostic, and it wasn't long before I evolved into a proud Atheist. I credit my parents' decision to allow me to choose for myself as leading me to this point in my life, and I personally believe that true freedom of thought, allowed early in life, can only lead to Atheism. I only just joined "Think Atheist" but already I love it. I have been so inspired by reading all of these stories and it is so helpful knowing there are others who live and "non-believe" as I do, when so many of those I am close to judge and dismiss my thoughts. Thank you!

I was born into a roman catholic family and believed all the hokus pokus, threats and fears which that church now abuses people's minds and hearts with. I have now been reborn and am enlightened in that I now believe that we are born, we grow up, eventually die and that is it. The fact that we get through birth and life intact is totally down to luck.. some of which we create ourselves. Other factors such as where we are born is crucial and down to luck. In the developing world, many of us would already be dead because of poverty which is not self-created. We live on in our children and create the perceived view of hell or heaven for ourselves and those around us here on earth. I now recognise that the atheists around me are some of the most level-headed people I know and I think it is because of living selflessly in the here and now, without fear of hell fair and damnation.

In order to be atheist, you cannot believe there is a god or gods... by definition of the word. It's not a club a person tries to get into or out of. If you don't believe there are gods, you are atheist... even if you choose to forgo the title.

Atheists don't believe there are gods. They are not making a definitive statement about the possibility, however. They do not state "there is not god" but simply that they do not believe there is. No more than you believe there are unicorns. Could there be? I suppose. Is it likely? No. We have not been convinced there is a reason to believe so we don't. It's very simple.

So Atheists do not have to believe that there is no God either.

Or do they have to believe there is no such thing as God?
