Welcome to WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

Ecology | Animal Science & Evolution | Ethology & Behavioral Ecology | Wildlife Conservation | Habitat Preservation | Animal Cognition & Emotion | Endangered Species | Animal Rights & Welfare | Animal Agriculture | Companion Animals | Humane Living & Activism

As you can guess, this group is all about animals—both wild and domesticated—and the complicated relationship we have with them. It is about exploring and understanding their lives, and how they touch ours and we theirs in return.

As listed above, posts can consist of anything related to animals: science, evolution, behavior, food production, humane living, and pets.

Whether you work with animals or if you’re just a nature lover and pet owner, this group will hopefully have something for you. I look forward to your contributions.

@ TAA: Yeah, didn't Canada deplete cod in that area by overfishing?

Does anyone remember the good ole days of EarthFirst! and one of my favourite slogans: Kill cows NOT bears! I am with PETA on animal rights advocacy, but, not at the expense of the 'wild things'. If we got rid of all cow farming larger than minimal family subsistence, there would be lots of extra space for bears, indeed.

On bears... One the last major refuges for intact grizzly populations (enough contiguous land and sufficient bears to sustain populations in longterm), the Nahanni Park, in Northern Canada, is looking into an expansion phase. Loss of continuous habitat is one of the greatest threats to wildlife. I would love to see more parks enlarged. Without sufficiently large continuous habitat all wildlife is doomed to go the way of cod fish...

Thanks Sydni. Welcome aboard. Notice I used one of your recommendations from the HA group. Let me know if you have more -- and that goes for all of you. : )

Love the name of the group and the concept. I'll certainly be an active member here. Thanks for starting it up Dallas.

@Everyone: Thanks for joining my new group. I look forward to your participation.

@ TAA: Yes, it was difficult to envision a concept/name that included all animals without being too dull. But since domesticated dogs and cats can easily turn feral when they lack human companionship, there is still a part of them that is essentially wild at heart. Not so?

My favorite pet/companion ever - the animal I learned the most about - was my pet raccoon. I often wonder if many animals that are considered wild and dangerous today will someday be domesticated - like the raccoon.

I had a black puttums too. Her name was Poppet. She lived to be thirteen years old. I miss her, :/body>

Funny the co-existence of the two concepts: "wild things" and "companionship". It may work out. I miss my black putticat. He had a wonderful but short life due to his lack of respect for moving cars, better said motorists' lack of respect for beautiful intelligent black putticats :(
