I don't know that's true Mark. I joined a local vegan/veggie group and most of them are also freethinkers. How glorious it is to find community with people who also tend to be politically liberal.
I also joined a freethinkers group and there is a good bit of cross over in these groups though, probably the majority isn't vegan / veggie.
When you belong to a fringe group of people such as these two, I've found they tend to think more deeply about things, particularly things that matter to me.
I'm not trying to create a movement though. So maybe the above doesn't speak to what you are talking about?
Comment by Mark Patrick on January 20, 2012 at 10:01am On the other hand, identifying as a veganatheist would alienate most other vegans and most other atheists in one stroke. So probably not a good candidate for a "movement". Oh well.
I agree with you Mark, vegan-ism is rational though I'm not vegan myself. Can't quite get there. I'm veggie though. I think that from a world hunger POV, eating things that you've fed the grain and corn that could have kept people from starving is incredibly wasteful and inefficient.
Michael sounds like a fun restaurant. I want to try it!
Comment by Mark Patrick on January 20, 2012 at 9:57am For me, veganism and atheism go together like peanut butter and chocolate, but the Venn diagram might show only a tiny intersection for the population at large. Atheism is rational (obviously). Is veganism? I like to think the compassionate argument for veganism IS rational, in the sense that it's a utilitarian argument than includes any being capable of experiencing pain as a deserving of consideration.
Comment by Michael West on January 20, 2012 at 9:36am I'm with Bleacheddecay. I did eat at a great punk rock vegan restaurant yesterday. I don't know if it's Athiest but it is ran as a co-op and uses mostly local ingredients!!
I can be engaged when anything happens that interests me.
Comment by Charlie Quaid on January 19, 2012 at 11:42pm Probably not, but what do I know. I'm the token omnivore!
Comment by Mark Patrick on January 19, 2012 at 11:33pm Just found this group and it appears to be a ghost group. Last comment on August 15, 2011. <sigh> Anyone still engaged here?
Comment by Dogly on August 15, 2011 at 11:29pm Please make a small correction to the introduction. "This group is open to anyone who is.".. (not who are).
