Comment by Dogly on May 24, 2012 at 8:33am I, too, am surprised that the quality of the arguments on this site is so much clearer, carefully thought out, and rational, when discussing anything except the ethics of eating and using the other animals. Suddenly, the defensive, unexamined, angry statements pour out. The internal conflict seems to prevent the carnist from his usual ability to use well considered arguments. Instead we get rage, personal insult, and extremely dopey excuses. Friends, if who you are eating has left you feeling ill at ease, and sick at heart, be brave enough to really think about this conflict. Stop avoiding all the articles and video exposing the realities of animal exploitation. Make decisions about this subject the same way you would with anything else. Research, reading, and honest deliberation. Oh, and call upon your sense of justice!

Comment by stephen on April 1, 2012 at 8:10pm @MikeyMike1 - I couldn't answer that question on people relieving themselves of moral obligation. It's probable that no obligation exited towards animals in the first place. As we know, Christianity has especially allowed for the dismissal of a moral obligation to animals for centuries. Its heritage is embedded in Western culture, in which many atheists partake without realizing or questioning (there is one connection for you, Michelle). The resentful atheists you mentioned are likely demonstrating cognitive dissonance. There's no way they want to give up their factory farmed bacon for the sake of ethics. They will rationalize their way out of it with all kinds of nonsense and get upset when you question it. They start out from basis of ignorance and go downhill from there, all the while thinking they are being oh-so rational. Sam Harris is not among those clowns, and he once said he could find no moral defense for eating animals in this day and age, but then he turned around and gave himself a free pass like they all do. Very disappointed when I saw that. Almost stunned. By the way, I haven't read all posts on your forum debate but I'd wager most of their arguments boil down to "might is right." Cheers.
Comment by Michelle Rhea on April 1, 2012 at 7:16pm Just catching this discussion now, and don't have time to go back right now and read all the posts as I'm just taking a break from readying my house for a reception for a famous (infamous?) atheist. Hope to read more later in the week. I am atheist and vegan, but I don't see any connection between the two. I am atheist because I find no evidence of any deities. I am vegan because I have compassion for all living things, not just humans. I find it strange that people who call themselves "spiritual", (and I am surrounded by them here in southern California), are not more often vegan, or, at least, vegetarian. As for the "selective freethinking" someone mentioned.... I don't see freethought as meaning one never reaches any conclusion about what one has been pondering.
Comment by stephen on April 1, 2012 at 5:12pm @MikeyMike1 - yes, and you will find it on most atheist forums. Atheists can be as delusional and ignorant as any religious fuckwit. They engage in what I call selective free thinking. One of the best ways to find that out is to pose the question you did on the forum, then sit back and watch them all smugly give themselves free passes while demonstrating the intellectual rigor of an average redneck hick. I don't even bother engaging in debate anymore because you cannot penetrate the depth of the ignorance or the thickness of the skulls, not to mention the naivete, of so many atheists.
Comment by Michael West on January 20, 2012 at 4:21pm I like it, Dogly. You need to put than line on t-shirt!
