Welcome to THINK POETRY

A Song

Oh do not wanton with those eyes,
Lest I be sick with seeing;
Nor cast them down, but let them rise,
Lest shame destroy their being:
O, be not angry with those fires,
For then their threats will kill me;
Nor look too kind on my desires,
For then my hopes will spill me;
O, do not steep them in thy tears,
For so will sorrow slay me;
Nor spread them as distract with fears,
Mine own enough betray me.

In the spirit of anti-saccharine love songs, I'm posting another love-gone-wrong song. Hey, what can I say? Pain makes me introspective!

      D E V I L   D O L L

I can remember when love was so easy
Summers were breezy blue skies
And I can remember how you came unto me
Tried to undo me with lies

Never thought I'd get through it
Never thought I could do it
But I put you behind, Devil Doll

I can remember all the years that followed
All the times I swallowed my pride
And I can remember nights, staring at ceilings
Always keeping my feelings inside

Never thought I'd get through it
Never thought I could do it
But I put you behind, Devil Doll

      [Instrumental]

Now those times are just mem'ries of growing
Of years never knowing it all
Now those times are just mem'ries in the back of my mind
Since I put you behind, Devil Doll

Never thought I'd get through it
Never thought I could do it
But I put you behind, Devil Doll

I put you behind, Devil Doll

I had to download Heroes . . . I wasn't familiar with it. Actually, I downloaded the entire album by mistake.

I like a lot of David Bowie's songs. My favorite is probably Fame. It's unique.

Anyway, I also downloaded the lyrics to Heroes. It's an interesting lyric but I have to say I can't really identify with it. There's really no accounting for these kinds of things.

Hi George,

NIce, vivid imagery.

What led you to this poem?

@Zombie Atheist,

I know what you mean. I've tried to capture the joy of love in some of my songs and they always end up syrupy and saccharine. I suppose that says something about love -- or about me (I'm not sure which).

Come to think of it, most of the popular, lovey-dovey, songs I can think of are either trite or unabashed tugs at heartstrings.

What say ye, everybody? What's a good example of a great lovey-dovey love song?

@Atheist Exile Wow I normally HATE love songs but that was beautiful. I loved the back and forth in the chorus.... (if thats the right term I dont know much about song writing lol.)

And thanks for the compliments I'll be sure to put up more! :)

My son has recently shown an interest in the guitar. He's now got some of the basic chords down pat. But, like me, he'll never be a virtuoso. So I played one of my songs for him and told him that no matter how far he gets with his guitar, he'll always have a companion sitting in its case, waiting to be hauled out.

He said the song was "catchy" and that he liked the lyrics. That's all the prompting I needed to post the lyrics here :-).

This song IS autobiographical. It's about my first wife and I. I had just turned 19 and she was almost 17 when we got married. We were too young and immature for marriage.

     S H E   W A N T E D   TO   P L A Y

The sun broke through the clouds
As she lay waking
A voice cried out from the crowds
Another heart breaking

   She wanted to play
   I wanted to say . . . I love you

I ran to her
Like the summer runs to fall
She began to purr
Like a kitten with a ball

   She wanted to play
   I wanted to say . . . I love you

      The card she was dealing
Sure made it hard on feeling
The world would ever stop reeling

At a frantic pace
As she rode and I carried
A romantic race
To die or get married

   She wanted to play
   I wanted to say . . . I love you

We flew past the finish line
Not knowing we had crossed it
Blind, blind, to every sign
We had it all but lost it

   She wanted to play
   I wanted to say . . . I love you

      The card she was dealing
Sure made it hard on feeling
The world would ever stop reeling

         She wanted to play
         I wanted to say . . . I love you

Oh! I forgot to mention that this song is not autobiographical. I used creative license: it's a fictional scenario.

People often think this is a real story of a real relationship. It is not.

Almost all my poetry is actually lyrics for songs I've written over the years and I've already exhausted my non-lyric portfolio here . . . so here comes some lyrics. I used to have these songs as MP3s but have lost them somewhere between the U.S. and the Philippines. Once I find a quiet place to re-record them, I'll do so and post them here. For full effect, these lyrics really need the music that goes with them. Here's the first one . . .

     T H E N O T E

I found the note you left behind
It said I'd clouded up your mind
And the clouds grew dark and full of rain
And then released a storm of pain
Then released a storm of pain
A storm of pain

I don't know why you left at night
And took with you the morning light
It's not right to leave that way
Believe me babe, someday you'll pay
Believe me babe, someday you'll pay
Someday you'll pay

     Happiness gives into grieving
     Desire waits for relieving
     Faith always precedes deceiving
And loving is the past tense of leaving

I thought I'd never write you a song
That was before you did me wrong
I guess I get the most inspired
When love grows weary and faith gets tired
Love grows weary and faith gets tired
And faith gets tired

This song is intended to sting
Every time you hear me sing
Maybe some day you'll know how I feel
Because of you, my words are real
Because of you, my words are real
My words are real

     Happiness gives into grieving
     Desire waits for relieving
     Faith always precedes deceiving
And loving is the past tense of leaving

Maybe some day you'll know how I feel
Because of you my words are real
Because of you my words are real
       My words are real

@Zombie,

I like your word selection. It evokes a sense of disillusionment and a rude awakening to the reality of this world.

George,

I was REALLY impressed with that last poem . . .

. . . until the last line . . .

. . . E A Poe . . .

Guess I should have followed the thread! I've been away too long :-)
