My high school had a world religion course that I wanted to take but since they only introduced the year I was leaving I couldn't. Having something like that taught in elementary (public) school could be beneficial IF IT'S ACTUALLY ABOUT ALL RELIGIONS. If it is predominantly Christian then no good at all.

World religions isn't really an appropriate course for that age group, especially if it's being used to talk at length about one faith over others. Religion should only be covered in public schools where it has academic relevance.

I have heard of it popping up in elementary schools now and there where teachers felt it their duty as a good Christian to teach the children some good Christian values. In the cases I've heard about, parental complaints put an end to it pretty quickly. If I were a teacher, I would generally refrain from commenting one way or the other. Not my place.

@ Kim Bruce: Are you serious!? In a direct manner? Do you mean a religion course? I know in Ontario, as anywhere else, I suppose, you have Christian teachers whose biases are rather apparent in their lesson plans, but they are not to promote any particular religion in school. One teacher I volunteered for, in her grade 5 class, certainly showed her biases. I was so annoyed, but had to bite my tongue to get a good reference out of her for teacher's college.

Born in Dundas, Ontario. Lived in Hamilton for something like twenty years, Ottawa for two, Toronto for one and spent the last three and a half years in Vancouver. These places, one and all, have been remarkably easy places for an atheist to live.

it's good to see that atheists are joining together. the advantage that religions have is that sense of community.
we have a chance of being taken seriously, now, thanks to sites like this.

atheism is the best hope that humanity has of surviving itself.
