Hello Everyone :)

Originally from Cape Breton Island , moved to Oromocto NB for a few years and Now I am in Owen Sound Ontario :) Anthropology Degree and currently working in Healthcare ... Any other Anthro/Health 'bugs' out there in Ontario who would like to chat ? Or anywhere in Canada for that matter ?

Hi! I'm a Canadian atheist from the Montreal region in Quebec.

I'm dying to find other atheists in my region... especially if they can speak/write in french.  I'm eagered to have french speaking atheists on my Facebook page to discuss with, because most of my family & friends don't speak english and I think such  "exposure" would be great.

Hey all! I was born in Red Deer, Alta, lived in Germany, North Bay, Trenton, Winnipeg and a little town in the Niagara Peninsula (yep, RCAF brat!), studied in Oklahoma (Christian University) and Montreal (U.de M.), moved to Toronto for 8 years, then returned to Montreal. (So do I qualify as a Canadian? Lol!) Now I live with my family in Saint-Lazare, a little town west of the island of Montreal. Look forward to connecting with locals.

Ah, rough timing.  I could help you out for a place to crash on the night of the 9th if your schedule is not too locked down, but the 8th probably wouldn't work.

All parties pressure their members to vote along with the party, but I agree that Harper appears to be especially domineering.  Let's assume that every MP is going to vote on a given issue, and every non-Conservative MP is going to vote in opposition to the Conservatives.  Fourteen Conservatives would have to vote in opposition to the rest of the party in order to bridge the difference in numbers.

 

Now, both those assumptions are unrealistic, but it does give a bit of a sense of what the opposition has to deal with.

 

In terms of GLBT rights, it think the biggest issue will be a lack of support in any new legislation and funding for social programs rather than any active attacks on rights.  That's not to make light of the situation, but I don't foresee a loss of rights.  Ultimately, there is still the Canadian Human Rights Council, the Supreme Council and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  Sadly, the Harper government will be appointing three new justices of the Supreme court through out this term.  I don't know what kind of choices will be made there.  

 

Same-sex marriage is the right that Harper most vocally opposed (to my knowledge), but he already called that to a free vote for invoking the notwithstanding clause and lost.  He didn't even have full support within his own party on that one.  He's a ballsy PM, but I don't think he's audacious enough to revisit the issue.

The thing that scares me about Harper's Conservative Party is Harper. Harper controls the party, even if you a MP from HPC did want to speak out he would not want to.

As a Canadian belonging to a minority group, we are(me & my partner) part of the the  GLBT community one of us is part of the only GLBT not to be protected under the charter of rights and freedom. With Harper's close connection to the religious right what are they going to do now for the R.R.(religious right)?

Are we going to experience a loss of rights? Who is going to stop him?

Now the other thing is Harper talked about setting in place a Ministry of Religion what does that mean and what will their purpose be?
