So, the parents of my first dog have recently had another litter.  I am sorely tempted to take one, but this would make a third puppy (the other two are 3 and 2.5 years).  We have a newborn, too.

I know I probably shouldn't, but what does the collective say?  Is there something I should know that might influence me one way or the other?  My father told me a third would be bad, that two would gang up on one and I would then need four.  He never explained what would stop three from ganging up on one.  But, I thought maybe he had some insight into wolf pack psychology.  He probably doesn't, but...

Well, maybe you all do.  Help me out.  These dogs are cute and the pup we had from these parents is a sweetheart!

Thanks, guys! I'm not sure I am ready for the extra work, but we may go look at the puppies this week.
Good points. We have a really big backyard for the dogs to run and play in, so we don't get them out on walks as much as we would like. The dog hair and maintenence is aleady a chore with the newborn and just two.

No, I admit quite shamefully that we should walk them more. They do enjoy the walks very much and they are exhausted much sooner. But, between work schedules and my bad knee, it has not been a priority.

When it comes to Shibas, it is often said the best exercise for them is another Shiba. And they do wear each other out. But, I agree with you (and Adriana) that walks are something different.
oh, Reggie, don't go look at the puppies unless you rationally decide BEFOREHAND that you do want a 3rd dog!!!

You KNOW you WILL not be able to resist a puppy!!

Haha! You are on to me. I know I shouldn't, but I think I am trying to trick myself into it by going. Plus, I'd love to see Serenity see her parents again. I doubt she would know it, but maybe?

And you are right that I should look at homeless dogs. This is not a breeder but a family that owns two Shibas and they breed them every so often. The dogs and puppies live the same as they would at my house, which is nice because Serenity was already potty trained at 9 weeks when we got her.

The only reason I want another specifically from them is that Serenity is a PERFECT, sweetheart of a dog. The other one (see my profile pic) is a lovable rascal, but a rascal nonetheless.
I am beginning to grow fond of a full and lively home.
I think you guys are right.

Shibas may not be an issue like other smaller dogs. They are very similar to my Siberian Husky I had when I was a boy and not at all like smaller dogs I know. But, why risk it?

I may end up with another Malcolm and that would be a disaster. Especially since I am not one to give away a dog just because it is a hassle. They are family once I bring them home, for good or for ill.
I thought Temple was cattle only.

I will have to check out that book!

Putting it in my queue now!
In the very short term? Not really.

Damn reality checks are real downers.
A boy can dream, can't he?
Hahaha! We haven't been allowed over to see the pups yet. We will see, we will see.
Well, the spousal unit found herself between jobs shortly thereafter, so we held our family to the current number. She has since found a new job, but I think we have gotten over our puppy love. We really do have our hands full at the moment. I am a sucker for puppies, though.
