The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959), directed by Terence Fisher

I watched this 1959 production of The Hound of the Baskervilles, starring Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes and Christopher Lee as Sir Henry. I liked it. I thought it was very well done. The sets were great, and the film they used back then has such a wonderful quality of visual texture and color that they are always enjoyable to watch. I also really like the setting of the moor – so desolate yet beautiful.

Here is the trailer.

I also started watching the 2002 BBC TV version with Richard Roxburgh and Ian Hart. I’ve seen this one twice before, but it is a good production and worth multiple viewings.

I noticed the 2002 version does not have the tarantula scene. Has anyone read the original book, and if so, is that scene in there or was it made up for the 1959 version?

I also noticed just now there is a 1939 version with Basil Rathbone that I’ve never seen. I’ll have to check that out, too.
