One reason I recall, that the ancient Greeks and Romans accomplished great things in philosophy and math, but not much in science, is they disdained experimentation. They felt that one could "reason" out all questions, and experiments were vulgar or childish tinkering. This is great stuff for the Camp Quest kids.

yep. when he said, "what do you think will happen," i said out loud, "they'll equalize."

and yes, common sense was the basis for geocentric models of the solar system, the idea that the earth is flat, and phlogiston theory.

Yeah, I thought his explanation seemed weak too; nice link, much better explanation. And very counter-intuitive; by a quick assessment, I'd think they would equalize. Really showing how "Common Sense Is Worthless in Science."

:P

that video of the two balloons is cool. very counter-intuitive. the explanation the guy gives at the end sucks though. here's a far better one.

Check out God on the Brain documentary. Highlights advances made in brain science regarding temporal lobe epilepsy and the relation that condition has to religious and spiritual experiences. Also discusses Neurotheology which is awesome.

True it does read a bit weird.
However, the story within the quotations is picked straight from the link given. And the present tense is used on other occassions within the story, perhaps it's a transcript from a live interview?? ..

"We were surprised because it's so big," she says. "We were expecting something smaller."

Would a "that's what she said" remark be appropriate here? Well, she did say it!
