On the last episode of House M.D. a very interesting technology caught my eye. It was an actual mind-reading device which could project a crude image of what the subject was seeing or even thinking. The most exciting think is that this device actually exists, though not as advanced as presented (as far as I'm aware of). This is the real-life technology that can read someone's mind:

I think it's a very promising technology because of the increasing advancement in the fields of artificial intelligence and pattern-recognizing software.

They've been able for a while now to detect by brain scan if someone recognizes a picture of something, e.g. the picture of a crime scene being shown to a suspect. Here's a book that gets into the technology and ethics of using it in court.
