since we're nearing the end of TGD let's start throwing out suggestions for the next book we read and discuss.

previously, when ultimately deciding to read TGD, we had also batted around some other titles. do we want to go to one of those or something entirely different?

throw out your suggestions!

I want to read something I haven't before... I have a copy of Michel Onfray's Atheist Manifesto I haven't had the time to pick up yet... also maybe we could throw in a few fictional titles too for those of us who enjoy that sort of thing.
absolutely! you know guys there's nothing that says we can't have subgroups reading and discussing different books in different threads! let's hear your suggestions!
Not a suggestion for the book club, just a recommendation for an awesome reference book. "The Counter-Creationism Handbook" By Mark Isaak (amazon) It takes common arguments from creationists and lists them in an outline form and then tics off evidence against. I feel a lot more comfortable reading all those absurd comments on youtube videos and blogs now! Honestly if you wanted to make your own thunderf00t style videos I think this is all you need...
nice. thanks denuvian! i might have to check that out. if nothing else it'd be a good reference book when communicating with the creationists.
Breaking the Spell was one of the commonly suggested books from the first process of suggestions and voting. it seems to be an easy choice to include it in the vote for the new book.

d.b. if you want to read up on the evolutionary basis for religion, besides Dennett's Breaking the Spell, you can try Pascal Boyer's Religion Explained and Scott Atran's In Gods We Trust.
I always suggest Bart Ehrman because I need an excuse to read his new book. :-P

Or the classic, The Case Against God by George H. Smith.
anything by Ehrman is fantastic. can't go wrong there. and Smith's classic is a withering critique of the belief in god. his was the first book i read, way back when i was 11, that made me understand that there was a name for my lack of belief. i've read it probably 3 or 4 times since. i'm always ready to go and reread it. it's like a trip down memory lane. :)
I am currently reading (and probably everyone else has already ;) god is not Great and Breaking the Spell. I am interested in next reading The Secular Conscience. I would go for any the books mentioned in this thread however - thanks for the suggestions!
Feel presumptuous making suggestions after joining TA just two days ago, but I've been wanting to read Karl Popper, 'The Logic of Scientific Discovery' for ages, but found it heavy going and I could use some peer pressure and motivation to make a proper start on it.
don't feel presumptuous! as soon as you join up you're a full member! your suggestions are welcome and sought. Popper's book is a great suggestion!
I'm with Omnicide, I've been eyeing up Atheist Manifesto...if I have any free time grrrr. I'm also reading "Godless" by Dan Barker right now, which is a good book for any former Christians. Something sciencey would be cool too. Darwin???
Origin of the Species would be great to read. i'm surprised by how so few people, even those who vehemently opposed creationism and who have somewhat of an understanding of evolution, have read the seminal work that started it all.
