since we're nearing the end of TGD let's start throwing out suggestions for the next book we read and discuss.

previously, when ultimately deciding to read TGD, we had also batted around some other titles. do we want to go to one of those or something entirely different?

throw out your suggestions!

I have the Origin of Species as an audio book, freely distributable, if anyone wants it.
and for that matter i have it as a pdf ebook! if anyone wants it they can see my page and download it right from my box.net folder. failing that, just send me a personal message and i can email the file to you.
Its a tough read. I found the period language difference difficult at times. I've started it a couple times. I would read one chapter and find it so fascinating and exciting; then the next would almost put me to sleep.

Finally I found it on audio book, and I've been listening to it. I know this is a little bit of a cop-out, but I find that I can follow it better, and digest the information better.
Origin of Species would be a cool to read. I been wanting to get to that for awhile now as well.
I've heard that "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson is quite exceptional.
that is actually a great book. that would be an interesting discussion. that too is on my page in my box.net folder if anyone's interested in reading it in pdf format.
Here's one coming out this summer that should be interesting for future discussion:

Unscientific America: How Scientific Illiteracy Threatens our Future
here he is talking about his journey on FORA if anyone's interested. be aware that if you're in the process of or about to read his book there's likely some spoilers in the video.

"Counterknowledge: How we surrendered to conspiracy theories, quack medicine, bogus science, and fake history." By: Dr. Damian Thompson (PhD in sociology of religion) Not really an "atheist" book per-say but a rational one! From inside cover:
"We are being swamped with dangerous nonsense. From 9/11 conspiracy theories, to Holocaust denial to The Da Vinci Code's revision of ancient history, from the book of mormon's account of settling the New World to the belief in a link between the MMR vaccince and autism, we are experiencing an epidemic of demonstratably untrue descriptions of the world. This pandemic isn't about religious faith or untestable truths. Rather, it's about everyday beliefs that contradict clear evidence - be it historical or scientific - concerning the observable, material, and known world we inhabit."
this just went on my reading list! looks good. :)
So what is the new book for this group? May I suggest, as I have before, anything by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Be it, Infidel or The Caged Virgin or maybe an oldie but still goodie, The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie.
