Our guest this week is Dr. Gregory Dawes, live!
Dr. Dawes is a professor and philosopher, teaching religious studies and philosopy at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
He received his first graduate degree at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, a Jesuit institution run by the Holy See and founded by Pope Pious X in 1909. He then returned to New Zealand to get his PhD in Biblical Studies at the University of Otago. Not satisfied, he has since completed a second PhD, this one in the philosophy of religion.
His philosophical interests center on the methodological naturalism of modern science. It is this subject that his 2009 book, Theism and Explanation, examines.
Dr. Dawes argues that we need not (indeed, should not) reject theistic explanations in principle because even when we examine them alongside naturalistic explanations they fail to provide the kinds of things we demand from a good explanation.
