"When you say 'radical right' today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party away from the Republican Party, and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye." ~ Barry Goldwater (1994)

“The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it.” ~ H. L. Mencken

When childhood dies, its corpses are called adults and they enter society, one of the politer names of hell. That is why we dread children, even if we love them. They show us the state of our decay. ~ Brian Aldiss

“Religion speaks about the bliss of the next world, but it wants power in this one.” ~ Christopher Hitchens

“The Christian religion is a parody on the worship of the sun, in which they put a man called Christ in the place of the sun, and pay him the adoration originally paid to the sun.” ~ Thomas Paine

Our world is fast succumbing to the activities of men and women who would stake the future of our species on beliefs that should not survive an elementary school education.

-Sam Harris

religion does have it's uses. it helps to reveal the maniacs out there, they are drawn to religion like moths to a flame.
also, it helps to keep a lid on the population.
the trick is to avoid it whenever possible or ignore it, when it's not.

‎"I do not feel obliged to believe that same God who endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect had intended for us to forgo their use."

~Galileo Galilei

"To affirm that the Sun ... is at the centre of the universe and only rotates on its axis without going from east to west, is a very dangerous attitude and one calculated not only to arouse all Scholastic philosophers and theologians but als...o to injure our holy faith by contradicting the Scriptures"

~Cardinal Bellarmino, 17th Century Church Master Collegio Romano, who imprisoned and tortured Galileo for his astronomical works

‎"If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are
admitting that the assertion can't be taken on its own merits. If
something is true, we don't invoke faith. Instead we use reason to prove
it. Faith is intellectual bankruptcy. With faith, you don't have to put
any work into proving your case or overcoming objecti...ons. You can ‘just believe.’”

~Dan Barker

Brian Cox on people who think the world will end in 2012.

"They might be statistically right, because you've got be to be so f***ing stupid to believe it that they have a higher statistical chance of walking in front of a bus. So, in that sense, they could be statistically will be an advantage to all of us...the human race will progress...if people who believe that are statistically removed in 2012."

"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all." ~ Oscar Wilde

The man Of virtuous soul commands not, nor obeys. Power, like a desolating pestilence, Pollutes whate'er it touches; and obedience, Bane of all genius, virtue, freedom, truth, Makes slaves of men, and, of the human frame, A mechanized automaton. ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley

"We are under attack by Islamic militants for what we do in the world -- not for who we are or what we believe in." ~ C.I.A. bin Laden Unit Chief, Michael Scheurer

“If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.” ~ James Madison

"The government is the potent omnipresent teacher. For good or ill it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. To declare that the end justifies the means -- to declare that the government may commit crimes -- would bring terrible retribution." ~ Justice Louis Brandeis

"Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes. Fear is the basis of the whole thing -- fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand." Why I Am Not A Christian -Bertrand Russell
