"I don't believe in an afterlife, so I don't have to spend my whole life fearing hell, or fearing heaven even more. For whatever the tortures of hell, I think the boredom of heaven would be even worse." ~ Issac Asimov

If religion and atheism were sex...

Atheism would be like masterbation; you know you are by yourself -but hell- you're having a good time!

Religion would be like masterbation with a happy face drawn on your hand; its still only you, but you like pretending you are not alone.

But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?
Mark Twain

Don't tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don't tell them where they know the fish.
Mark Twain

It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand.
Mark Twain

Laws control the lesser man... Right conduct controls the greater one.

Loyalty to petrified opinion never yet broke a chain or freed a human soul.

"Men think epilepsy divine, merely because they do not understand it. But if they called everything divine which they do not understand, why, there would be no end of divine things." - Hippocrates

Ah that old bug a boo dualism. Right=wrong good=bad beautiful=ugly and etc. Would you say a little more about naturalism and your statement around causal chain and contra=causal. I would address these if I understood what they were. Regardless, I would still come back to the reality of there not being any choices. The old “I can go to the left or the right, whichever I choose. If we knew enough about the person’s history, we could reasonably predict which path he would take. The point is his going one way or the other, is not a choice, it is determined. Which reminds me, many people confuse pre-determined with determined. Behavior is determined ie has determinants, but it is NOT pre-determined. Back to dualism, that is a tough one. We are so conditioned to see and believe in dualism that it’s really difficult not to get caught up in that one.

The world holds two classes of men -- intelligent men without religion, and religious men without intelligence ~ Abu'l-Ala-Al-Ma'arri

All of the comments Josh Nankivel made in his quote are applicable to the whole idea of behavior not being determined. Free will is the answer we rarely question.. We are all so conditioned and we never think twice as to the truth of this way of viewing reality. It is even a stronger believe system than the belief in god. If we do not look for the determinants of the behavior, there is not much hope of making any helpful changes. The old saying “do the same behavior and expect different results” is one definition of insanity.
