The following quotes are from the UK National Secular Society's weekly E bulletin.
"The only way — and I mean the only way — that the Catholic Church is going to change its stance on [the child abuse] issue, or indeed on any issue, is if Catholics vote with their feet, and get the hell out of there."(Greta Christina, Alternet)
"Many believe that the US population is steadily becoming more religious – but this is an optical illusion. Many evangelicals have simply become more aggressive and more political."(Barry Kosmin, Trinity College, USA)
[Anton Lavey - The Satanic Bible] [Addressing Christians]
"I question all things. As I stand before the festering and varnished facades of your haughtiest moral dogmas, I write thereon in letters of blazing scorn: Lo and behold; all this is fraud!
No creed must be accepted upon authority of a "divine" nature. Religions must be put to the question. No moral dogma must be taken for granted - no standard of measurement deified. There is nothing inherently sacred about moral codes. Like the wooden idols of long ago, they are the work of human hands, and what man has made, man can destroy!
He that is slow to believe anything and everything is of great understanding, for belief in one false principle is the beginning of all unwisdom."
Our Earth is degenerate in these later days; there are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end; bribery and corruption are common; children no longer obey their parents; every man wants to write a book and the end of the world is evidently approaching.” — From a translation of an inscription on an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E. I'm just sayin'.(Via Bart King.)
I am happy to be god free.
"I have no faith and that is accounted evil; but the world if it is saved will be saved by men of goodwill of much thought and of little faith... Faith stops thinking, and thought is the root of life without which we become beasts, faith is surrender and dependence and becoming children again, it is refusing to accept the unimaginable variety of truth and the unwillingness to pemit another his variant. Faith stops progress, and legitimizes murder..."
- Frank Yerby, The Saracen Blade
" In religion, what damned error but some sober brow will bless it, and approve it with a text". William Shakespeare
A pious Catholic is one who would be an Atheist if the pope was.
"must end their timidity"
IMHO it's really difficult to be certain about "doubt". Is my keyboard going to sprout wings and fly away? I am ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that it will not. People (especially atheists philosophers, it seems) like to play word games around this. It goes so far as to say, "we cannot know for absolute certainty that we are even here". Bullshit word games.
Atheists must not propagate doubt. We must stand up and say, "While there are things we don't know, no reason exists to believe in anything supernatural. There is absolutely NO evidence to support anything supernatural". So we should be saying, with absolute certainty, "THERE IS NO GOD" (no "probably" about it - that "probably" addendum makes it sound like we're hedging our bets. Atheists need to say, "it's more likely that Santa Claus exists than that god exists. At least I have seen Santa Claus."
Kind of a long one, but true...
"The plain fact is, religion must die for mankind to live. The hour is getting very late to be able to indulge in having key decisions made by religious people. By irrationalists, by those who would steer the ship of state not by a compass, but by the equivalent of reading the entrails of a chicken. George Bush prayed a lot about Iraq, but he didn't learn a lot about it. Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking. It's nothing to brag about. And those who preach faith, and enable and elevate it are intellectual slaveholders, keeping mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense that has spawned and justified so much lunacy and destruction. Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don't have all the answers to think that they do. ... And anyone who tells you they know, they just know what happens when you die, I promise you, you don't. How can I be so sure? Because I don't know, and you do not possess mental powers that I do not. The only appropriate attitude for man to have about the big questions is not the arrogant certitude that is the hallmark of religion, but doubt. Doubt is humble, and that's what man needs to be, considering that human history is just a litany of getting shit dead wrong. This is why rational people, anti-religionists, must end their timidity and come out of the closet and assert themselves. And those who consider themselves only moderately religious really need to look in the mirror and realize that the solace and comfort that religion brings you actually comes at a terrible price. If you belonged to a political party or a social club that was tied to as much bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, violence, and sheer ignorance as religion is, you'd resign in protest. .... If the world does come to an end here, or wherever, or if it limps into the future, decimated by the effects of religion-inspired nuclear terrorism, let's remember what the real problem was, that we learned how to precipitate mass death before we got past the neurological disorder of wishing for it. That's it. Grow up or die." -Bill Maher
