If the lord didn't want humans to be rebellious, why did he create them in his image ?       Mark Twain

“The physicist Niels Bohr once defined an expert as “a person who has made all the mistakes than can be made in a very narrow field.” From the perspective of the brain, Bohr was absolutely right. Expertise is simply the wisdom that emerges from cellular error. Mistakes aren’t things to be discouraged. On the contrary, they should be cultivated and carefully investigated.”
Jonah Lehrer in How we Decide, pp. 51

“Yet the more one is religious the less one dares to move toward certainty, to go beyond what one actually believes. I don’t deny anything, I believe in the possibility of everything.”
Marcel Proust

"Do unto others..." is a good rule of thumb. I live by that. Forgiveness is probably the greatest virtue there is. But that's exactly what it is--a virtue. Not just a Christian virtue. No one owns being good. I'm good. I just don't believe I'll be rewarded for it in heaven. My reward is here and now. It's knowing that I try to do the right thing. That I lived a good life. And that's where spirituality really lost its way. When it becomes a stick to beat people with. "Do this or you'll burn in hell." You won't burn in hell. But be nice anyway. -- Ricky Gervais

Wouldn't it be great if all Atheists donated books to libraries in commemoration of an Atheist friend ? Like the Xians do. Count the unread Xian book in any library - & cry WHERE ARE THE ATHEIST BOOKS ?

Why don't I believe in God? No, no no, why do YOU believe in God? Surely the burden of proof is on the believer. You started all this. If I came up to you and said, "Why don't you believe I can fly?" You'd say, "Why would I?" I'd reply, "Because it's a matter of faith." If I then said, "Prove I can't fly. Prove I can't fly see, see, you can't prove it can you?" You'd probably either walk away, call security or throw me out the window and shout, "F---ing fly then you lunatic."  -  Ricky Gervais

I reject any religion which requires that I place my common sense & reasoning ability in suspension while I contemplate it. This precludes my acceptance of all organised religions.

Religion is much like modern medications. It has unfortunate side effects. It tends to narrow the mind & harden the heart of those who  'overdose'.

Xianity claims a moral ascendency & asserts that it improves conduct where it holds sway. Historically however,it has always had an adverse effect  : Bigotry, persecution, witch hunts, inquisitions & wars - WHEN IT HAD THE POWER>

The 9/11 hijackers are in hell... the victims in heaven! Unless you agree with Al Qaeda, in which case the hijackers are in heaven and the victims in hell! Unless you're an atheist, in which case all of them are simply dead victims of stupidity. - Alan Harvey
