“One of the greatest challenges facing civilization in the 21st century is for human beings to speak about their deepest concerns – about ethics, spiritual experience, and human suffering in ways that are not flagrantly irrational. Incompatible religious doctrines have Balkanised our world and these divisions have become a continuous source of bloodshed. Words like "God" and "Allah" must go the way of "Apollo" and "Baal" or they will unmake our world.”
– Sam Harris in Times April 2005.

And I can understand his position. My experience in Congregational Church – made in USA – has unmade my world. My world fragmented in one million peaces. Still recuperating; thanks to the presence of web-sites like this.

“On the dogmas of religion, as distinguished from moral principles, all mankind, from the beginning of the world to this day, have been quarreling, fighting, burning and torturing one another, for abstractions unintelligible to themselves and to all others, and absolutely beyond the comprehension of the human mind.” ~Thomas Jefferson

Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative.

'miracles' depend on our level of ignorance.

As for the Republicans, how can one regard seriously a frightened, greedy, nostalgic huddle of tradesmen and lucky idlers who shut their eyes to history and science, steel their emotions against decent human sympathy, cling to sordid and provincial ideals exalting sheer acquisitiveness and condoning artificial hardship for the non-materially-shrewd, dwell smugly and sentimentally in a distorted dream-cosmos of outmoded phrases and principles... Intellectually, the Republican idea deserves the tolerance and respect one gives to the dead. -H P Lovecraft

God is a materialist. It matters to him what we do with our bodies. It matters to him what we do with our stuff. I had a colleague at the University of Notre Dame who taught Judaica. He was Jewish and always said that any religion that does not tell you what to do with your genitals and pots and pans cannot be interesting. That is exactly true. In the church we tell you what you can and cannot do with your genitals. They are not your own. They are not private. That means that you cannot commit adultery. If you do, you are no longer a member of ‘us.’ Of course, pots and pans are equally important.” – Charismanglican Joey Aszterbaum

In line with what Atheist Exile quoted just below me, I would point out that: "A miracle represents a kind of absurdity in the concrete, something that obliges us to accept contradictory propositions.”

Man is the only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he has to solve. - Erich Fromm

In line with what Sydni Moser quoted, just below me, Elbert Hubbard pointed out that: "A miracle is an event described by those to whom it was told by people who did not see it."

“‘Faith,’ said St. Paul, ‘is the evidence of things not seen.’ We should elaborate this definition by adding that faith is the assertion of things for which there is not a particle of evidence and of things which are incredible”. - E. Haldeman-Julius, The Meaning Of Atheism
